Big scene, issue with distance when far from center of the scene

Hi folks,

I’m struggling with one of my project…

I have a scene with a Rafale, flying over a terrain at Mach 1 = 1200 km/h. (A video, using cycles and blender 2.72)

When the plane remain near the origin of the scene, all is all right.

Even near 500m from the center of the scene, it looks ok :

But then 8 km from the center of the scene :

(The plane takes only 23 seconds to travel this distance)

And 100 km from the center of scene :

I tried every thing i could : I Rescaled the scene up and down with a master gizmo, changed the scale of the scene in the scene tab…

I don’t know what to to.

You can easily re-create the conditions with the help of a simple primitive.

Thanks a lot if you can help me.

Any one ? Maybe an option somewhere to extend the floating point value ?
The fact : The more a mesh is small, and the more it will explode soon with the distance.

Hi, as far I know it is not possible to work with such dimensions in Blender because of precision problems.
Most 3D software has this problem, therefor CAD software is made.
I mean it is possible to have a 200 Km terrain but not have a cigarette box in the same scene.
You can fake this with different scenes with different World dimensions, iirc.

Cheers, mib

Thanks for your answer mib2berlin !

Yep, that exactly my problem right now. The rafale is about only 15m long so… very small. As I have explosions etc, I prefer to work in real scale.
But well if someone experienced the same issue and have a good workaround, I would be very grateful

Have you tried to play with the start and end values in the N-panel >> View >> Clip
and in Properties >> Camera >> Clipping ?
Maybe this solves a bit your problem.

Good Idea JoHal !

I just tried to change the clipping values for my camera… But unfortunately it does’nt change anything.

edit: nevermind, testet it by myself and it did’nt worked.

Sorry.

What about moving the landscape instead of the aircraft?

Thanks anyway for your help

Yeah, that’s a possibility… But well Animating a 300km² terrain on a curve, it can be a little bit hard haha
