Image texture on emitter?

I find that I cannot add an image texture to the emitter plane (which has billboard trees on it. The plane seems to ignore the image except to take on a solid color. Is there a way?

In the render or in the 3d viewport ?
What renderer ?
How are you mapping the texture ?

I have found a work-around: Make duplicate of emitter (keep same position), make it non-emitter / give it the texture / turn off display of original emitter in particles/render. This works, but it would be neater if the emitter could be textured, since I like the option of modifying the emitter shape late in the game and that requires remaking the textured plane each time.
