understanding and managing scale in the world

First, Thanks for taking the time to read this post,

To explain, I am usually a GIF maker and have had a solid grasp of basic animation and dealing with objects in kind of a small space in the world, I have loved doing this but want to start expanding into longer form animations- I am starting by trying to take principles I know from looping animations and apply them to a music video, but I am having trouble figuring out scale and making this idea work.

Basically I want to have one continuous shot for the entire video, I want the camera to be “flying” over a landscape, moving forward for the whole 3 or so minutes of the song with landscape going by. the terrain will be cybertron-esque, and there will be rockets taking off from the surface at different places.

Can any of you recommend tutorials that will help me figure out how to create the scene so that I can accomplish something on that scale?

TLDR; how to have a camera moving along a landscape for 3 minutes while having a manageable landscape?

Once upon a time i got the idea: Rotating cylinder, textured (displacement, height based materials), flattened by lattice?
If there is a plane emitter inside with all that random rocketry…
Edit: it actually works…http://www.pasteall.org/pic/show.php?id=80099
