Baked normal map appears grey

Hi,

I’m trying to render a normal map of a glove I modelled in blender (just to practice the process) but every time I bake it, the normal map comes out grey. Aren’t normal maps supposed purple. Even if this glove doesn’t have any deformations it should still appear as a blank purple image, right?

I’ve attached the blender file to show what I mean.

In the texture panel for the top material, disable the non existent normal map

So was it basically creating a second normal map over the first one?
