Move multiple faces along their respective normals

hey,

maybe a stupid question … but how do i move multiple faces along their respective normals?

cheers christian

Set pivot to Individual Origins. Alt S to scale along normals. That will move all the selected faces along their normals.

i changed the shortcuts but if i switch to individual origins, turn on “normal” and scale everything i get the result on the left while i’d like to get the one on the right.

ALT+S always got me some odd results.

A possible alternative is to use the Inset function.

  • Press I to inset

  • Move the mouse to make the inset thickness to be 0

  • Hold CTRL and move the mouse to make the inset depth

  • For more precision, validate what you did with a click or Enter and press F6 or look into the operator panel on the bottom of the toolshelf, make sure thickness is really 0 and tweak the Depth setting

Thanks for pointing to this addon, i wasn’t aware of its existence ! It’s a brillant one.
Indeed, on moving already extruded faces, the inset will make an additional extrude (forcing then you to delete the created edge loop if you don’t need it) , while the addon allow you to move the faces without additional extrusion, just great.

I noticed it’s available in the addon contrib folder in case you use a buildbot version of Blender so no need to download it in such case.

Shrink/Fatten got an update couple of days ago.
It’s context sensitive now. In Face Mode you will get the transform you want, Normal Move. Use the ALT key modifier while in the tool to get correct vector transforms.

thanks guys

also great news on the shrink/flatten tool!
can’t wait for the next relase ^^

All the latest versions on buildbot have it in already.

sweet
works like a charm !!
thanks again

This addon is just what I’ve been looking for, I’ve tried installing it inthe past and it wouldn’t work. Still won’t work for me. Can someone confirm it works in 2.72, and if it doesis there a “trick” to installiing it.

Thanks, Wig

It works with Blender 2.72b from blender.org.

JuhaW, it works with 2.72 now. I think it’s to do with me not understanding Github properly. The file I had was 54k, just downloaded it again and the file was only 5k this time. Works great.

Thanks to the author of this great addon.

Not that i know exactly what i do but 2.72.1 from buildbot, win32, throws handful of errors at me.
If i patch it as it is pointed out in provided above links, it does not.
