problem with hair

blender interpolated hair, cambed it till it was nice.
Then i adjustd interpolated child settings; which didnt look nice
So i opened a second blender; to see the default values of it to revert.
Entered those again
-but then the hair became much to large.
-only in camb view the hair is drawn correctly, not in render, or in object view.

Any ideas of what has gone wrong here ?.

In the particle settings, under display, increase the steps from 2 to 3,4,5 or 6

nope its not only display; also when rendering

Change render subsurf level to 1

well not sure what it was, in the end i undo-ed long enough to revert it, its working again and didnt behave anymore like that.
