Blender Freezes When Selecting Objects

Hi.

I’m very new to Blender, so I’ve been following some tutorials I found on Youtube. This particular tutorial has me creating a stuffed bear, using the basic skills I’ve learned so far plus a few new things like hair particles.

The project has: 240,000 vertices; 240,000 faces; and 480,000 triangles. I have two bear objects.

I am running Blender on Windows 8.1, using a computer with an i7-3517U 1.9Ghz processor, 8GB DDR3 RAM, and a GT 635M GPU. All drivers are up to date.

Creating objects, rotating and moving objects, et cetera, all seem to work fine and are reasonably responsive. However, when I select an object in this project, Blender freezes for a good 10-20s before becoming responsive again. Obviously, this makes editing my scene very difficult.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

What is your viewport shading set to?

the option looks like this:

Make sure that you have it in either “wireframe” or “solid” mode when selecting things in the viewport. These modes reduce the load on your computer.
