Transparency Problem after Painting on UV Map

I am a big time beginner to blender and I’ve been having trouble painting the hands on my model. After painting the UV map, everything is fine except the palm and thumb of the hand. The fingers are fine. The palm is completely see thru as well as the thumb (they were made as a single mesh, then I added on fingers later).

The mesh has inconsistent normals



Edit mode, select all, W -> remove doubles to remove double vertices, and Ctrl+N to make normals consistent and pointing outwards.
