remesh of pointed curve destroys the points

Dear masters of Blender,
I have got a problem with remeshing an imported svg-curve. The project is a wooden curved fantasy shield (armor) with a sheet metal emblem (the curve) on it. Later on it should be sculpted with cuts and dents etc. (from the last fights of the heroine) - that’s why I want to convert it to a mesh.
First I import the svg-curve (top-image) and extrude it (but it’s the same with curves drawn directly in Blender). Then I convert it to a mesh (ALT+C). Everything’s fine (middle picture) but I want to get rid of the triangles and therefore use the remesh modifier which gives a nice quad net (lower picture) but makes funny things to the pointed parts of the curve even on high octree depth values of 8 or higher.
I searched the internet for days and tried a hundred different ways of preparing the curve and as many different values for the remesh modifier but the result is always the same.
Does anybody have an idea how to get proper pointed meshes from a pointed curve?
Thank you for your help.
Martin
(I use Blender 2.72 on a linux-system)
