Can't model part of the jeep

I am trying to do a tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCwXtn0yIW8&list=PLBbfFcNW4C9fTv2N6A4mKwSCLDoPCsU5W&index=4 He has solidify and subsurf modifiers, but has straight edges. I think he has solidify turned off in edit mode. When I attempt to do it, my edges are distorted. I tried turning off those two modifiers in edit mode, but I still can’t get the edges to work the way he does in the tutorial. For instance, I can’t select the edges unless I use the box select (b). Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

From the tutorial (the edges look straight)

From the turorial:

This is what I get. I can’t select edges to connect. It’s all distorted.

You have some doubled vertices that aren’t helping, select all press W -> Remove Double (and you may need to CTRL+N after to recalculate the normals)

If Subsurf and Solidify distracts while doing tight corners or correcting something, disable visibility for the modifiers (eye icon on the modifier tab).

Thanks for responding. I had done that already, but not on the version I uploaded.

Thanks for responding. I did that before, but without satisfactory results. But that is part of the way I fixed it after reading your post. I also set the inner and outer crease settings in the solidify modifier back to default zero (which, per the tutorial, I had previously set to one). I kept the rim setting to one, though.
