Can anyone tell me what happened here? i fixed the issue by remodelling cos i simply couldn’t work out what the Hell had happened:

anyway, i got some weird render artifacts, and it turned out i had a cross of edges but no vert on it, and it only showed in wireframe. i couldn’t select the edges. i’d been doeing some retopo etc but can’t think what i’d have done to cause this?
Can’t be sure since you didn’t provide a .blend file but mirroring the mesh incorrectly would give such result. If it’s mirrored on itself and a vertex gets misaligned, it would show the actual vertex and a mirrored version without selection (because that view option is disabled on the modifier).
