Render Crash - Cuda GTX980

Hi,
I have a strange problem - i try to render a scene on GTX980 - the scene shows 3,2GB memory usage and I get a CUDA error - out of memory… but the gpu has 4GB memory… When i switch to rendered view - works with no problems…
Rendering on CPU works fine. Using Bledner 2,72b.

Hi digitalreactor, preview render has different settings, the subsurf is always set to one for example.
If you are on Windows the system use several hundert MB + Blender and other open windows.
Close all applications, Browser needs a lot of video memory, switch Aero off an so forth.
Depends on your hardware it is may possible to plug your display at onchip GPU and use the whole video ram from your GTX 980 for rendering.
The new HD 4/5000 from i5/i7 are very good for Blender.

Cheers, mib

Hi thx for reply - ive checked memory usage in GPU-Z - and it goes up to 3680 MB when try to render.
However i opened the same scene in blender 2.70 and memory usage on render is 2,6 GB (600 mb less)… weird…
