Newbie Question: Dark faces in the viewport?

Hey folks,

I’m pretty new to Blender, so this might seem silly to all you veterans…but I’m having an issue with dark faces in the viewport while I’m modeling in Edit Mode. As far as I can tell, my model is geometrically correct - what could be the cause of this? I have attached a photo below to clarify what I’m seeing.

The brightness changes based on where I’m orbiting in the viewport, so the faces look normal from some angles and too dark to work with from others. For reference, this is built out of mirrored flat planes using extruded edges rather than faces.

Thank you for your time!

Select all faces
Remove any double vertices (W / remove doubles) then recalculate the face normals (Ctrl+N)
