CodyWinch - Sketchbook

Decided to start a sketchbook. I do a lot of character/creature modeling. I welcome all comments and critiques on my work.

The first few posts will be some projects I have completed over the past few months since graduation.

This is a render of the character Warwick from League of Legends. Made entirely in Blender.

This is my first attempt at 3d printing a model. I based this model on a character that my good friend MegieMu made on deviantart.

The print came out pretty good. The model is 3 inches tall so some of the texture detail was too small to come through in the print. I messed up on the base and made the walls too thin so it broke in shipping. I had to reinforce the base and glue it back together but other than that I am happy with the print.

This is a model I made some time ago based on the Iron Man gauntlet in the third movie. Made entirely in Blender.

This is a gorilla character I am currently making. I did this sculpt to practice sculpting fur and baking to a low poly mesh.

A quick sculpt I did based on the Flash TV series costume.

This is some renders from a project I am working on atm. I am aiming for photo realism with this character. These images are of my recent work on the eye and the area around the eyes.

This is my first time doing realistic eyes with the caruncle and semilunar fold. All of my past eyes have been cartoony or perfect spheres.

Wow! That is a pretty amazing eye! I love the textures and shaders!
Would you ever post you’re eye shader setup?

Sure here is the shader setup

Wow, thanks lots, these are great models, great shaders, and this is a great sketchbook, keep it up!

Great simple shader setups(my favorite kind), thanks for sharing! Really nice stuff here, keep it coming

Thanks for the feedback!

Here is a little stylized scene I am working on for a small project. It started out as a low poly scene but I wasn’t satisfied with the results so I amped up the spikiness and amount of geometry. I like the result need to play around and get some good lighting.

Continuation of my scene added in the character and detail to the environment. I’m happy with the style of the look everything flat shaded and spiky with a smooth character. Time to get my idea written down and storyboarded.

Small update on my eye wip. Created a new iris texture in Blender. The old one was just taken from google images.

This one I based on high detail images of eyes. I created it by making cylinder with a hair particle system. I rendered the system with flat lighting. This render is used the for strands of the iris. For the webbing ontop I modeled it and used a combination of displacement and subsurf to get the details. I then rendered that and layered it ontop of the strand render. After that some photoshopping to get it looking nicer and this is the result.

I also added displacement to the iris for extra detail.

A quick model I made of a brain.
I made this model using some techniques I learned from Kent’s new helmet tutorial.
I box modeled the basic shape of the brain and then sculpted the brain tube pattern as a mask on the surface of the basic shape. I extracted this mesh with the sculpt tools addon. With the extracted mesh I used the Decimate, Smooth, and Displace modifiers to get the final shape.

I like the style of those trees you have in post 13.

The brain model looks good, but the texture can use a lot of work. Do you have a plan for what you want to do with the brain? Or is it mostly a modeling excercise? I ask, because the context of what the brain is for, would probobly dictate how to go about texturing it.

Yeah, the texturing in that picture was very fast. The brain is being used for some fake medical visualization type graphics. So the final material is a semi transparent blue sort of like a blueprint.

It’s a small part of a much bigger project so it is mostly a modeling exercise to get the complex array of tubes in the right shape without it being a huge pain.

First pass on high detail multires sculpt of a retopologized gorilla hand.

Finished the retopo of the gorilla. Built the skeleton and started on making muscles. I plan to use the muscle meshes to deform the gorilla during animaton. I have tested many methods but need a full character to get a real sense of what will work best.
