Cake icing - thoughts very welcomed

I have being playing with this shader for a good couple days.

The image here is basic breakdown with the shader.

I’d like thoughts on the subsurf, etc.

It’s not meant to be pretty or anything but I’d like to know where it stands.

I would say, to be able to have an opinion on how this shader looks, you have to improve the lightning you are presenting the shader in. Right now for me, everything is different shades of greys. chuck in a hdr and a sunlamp and represent your shader in a more realistic lighting. It would also help if you had the cake on a table with a wood material or something that makes the cake pop up in the render.

I agree with Cramer, it’s essentially underexposed and impossible to get a read on how well it represents an iced cake

Under exposed render.
Maybe consider adding some small bumps and cracks in the icing if you are trying to get a more realistic cake look.

I get it; it’s fondant, that sheet of covering they use now, not really icing like you’d put on with a spoon or spread around, right? Definitely present it with better lighting, a glossier plate underneath and maybe two or three colors to verify the flexibility of the shader, but I think you’re on the right track.
