Armature Deform

I’m more or less a newbie at Blender and I was rigging my character. After tweaking the basic Rigify Human Meta Rig and parenting it to my mesh with automatic weights, I went into Pose Mode and pulled the shoulder bone. The mesh twisted up and the entire thing looked horrible… what should I do? btw I’m using Blender 2.72.

You are not supposed to rig your character to the metarig. The metarig is a template used to generate the Rigify armature, which is what you use for your character. The metarig’s bones are not constrained in an animation-friendly way.
