Texturing Complex Objects?

I have a model that needs to be one animated mesh for a game but when I go to unwrap my model its going to be one big confusing mess. Is there any method to simplify my uv map so that texturing wont be a massive pain?

What do you mean by a “complex object?” Can you give us an example? What sort of textures will you be applying to the object … bitmap, procedural, what? Is the object, or can it be, broken down into a collection of other objects that can be dealt with separately?
