How do you make character (manga) outlines in Blender 2.71?

How do you make character outlines in Blender 2.71?
I was looking at some tutorials on how to make outlines for simple objects, when I did, I couldn’t find any videos on the updated version of Blender, which made me MAD!!!

What I want to do is have the ability to take a character mesh, it doesn’t really matter what kind, then make an outlined black and white image of that character so that I can edit it in like a photo shop or something. The problem is no matter what I do that the tutorial says, it never woks, I think it’s because I’m using a much more updated version of Blender.

In any case, I need to be able to do something like this for a project I’m working on,

I don’t need it to do animation (although that’s not a bad idea) I just need it for making 2D black and white images.

You don’t say what tutorials you have looked at but look into using the freestyle post process options in blenderhttp://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Render/Freestyle

http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Ref/Release_Notes/2.67/FreeStyle

I watched these, none of them helped no matter what I did. Do you think it’s because I’m using Blender 2.71?

Freestyle only currently works with the internal renderer, not with cycles. At its most basic, all you have to do is check the freestyle box in render settings

Alternatively, if you look in the post processing section and turn on edge and crank up the threshold, that might give you some good results, again, only available in Blender Internal

Okay then, my bad. Could you give me a tutorial of how to freestyle? I’ve never done outlines or anything before so the fact that they’ve updated it in Blender 2.72 makes it impossible to find a legit tutorial anywhere.

What I really wanna do is take a mesh like this one, and give it manga outlining to make it look like the image was drawn on a sheet of paper.
