Rigging and Modeling Single object legs and feet

Hey everyone. I am only just learning how to use blender so really have very basic knowledge. So yep complete beginner.

But my question. If you look at this animation ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PW21sIQf0U ) you can see that the little box man has a single object for his legs and feet. I really love this effect. I believe the lego games have a similar thing going on with their legs. I was wondering is there a name for this technique so I can look up modeling and rigging tutorials. I guess it looks like the character has weight which crumples his feet when he walks.
Thanks very much.
Best regards,

Not sure if there’s any special name to it … it’s all pretty standard Modeling, Rigging, Animating technique here…

there are countless modeling tutorials…

but I highly recomend the Nathan Vegdahl “Humane Rigging” Series for Rigging… it has invaluable information that I wished I had run across when ever I first started Rigging years ago…
