I hope I just clicked something that can undo this:
I started editing the basis by mistake but I did press ctrl z. however all of my shapekeys are now messed up.
It’s weeks worth of work and it’s just horrible.

Ctrl Z has a limit to how many steps it will undo. You can increase this user preferences.
You should be able to reload from a previous saved file, provided you saved versions of your work. I often duplicate my mesh at different points so I always have a back up in case I screw something up as well as saving new versions of the blend.
