I use a very basic workspace that I’ve saved as default,
If I load someone elses Blend scene I get their workspace.
If I select the default to get back to my workspace it removed the model that was in the Blend file
How do I see the model in my saved workspace?
When you load that other person’s blend file, make sure that “Load UI” is unchecked.
Global setting in User Preferences:

This will keep your UI when opening a blend file instead of taking over the one that saved with the blend.
