Show total vertices of selected mesh.

How do I see the total vertices of a selected mesh? I know there’s a info status thingy in the upper right hand corner of the default view, but it only seems to show the total amount in a scene.
I’m running Blender 2.71.

Go into edit mode and it will show how many vertices the object has
