UV mapping help please!

I am trying to make a 3D model skin for the game Team Fortress 2 and im pretty sure i need to UV map it but i have tried things and it will not work. I am trying to get the entire model to fit into one UV map. Also, when i make a UV map does it apply the materials already on the model? If not, is there a way to do that? Anyways, there is a screen shot of what i am trying to UV map with this.



8 parts in total
2 circles (the handle)
2 gems (top/bottom of handle)
2 torus (top/bottom of handle)
1 NurbsPath (2 side points)
1 cylinder (main point)

To UV unwrap you need to highlight everything in edit mode and press U, the smart UV project might be the best option for your model if not try the others. If you’ve done this I’m not exactly sure what part you’re stuck at if its setting the image texture up to use the UV for mapping or something else.
