2.7a won't run on old thinkpad

I have an old IBM Thinkpad R51 laptop with 500MB RAM and a 1024 x 768 dasplay. Blender 2.5 runs on my laptop but when I try to run 2.7a I get the error:
connect failed: No such file or directory
found bundled python: /home/dennis/MyQWork/blender-2.70a-linux-glibc211-i686/2.70/python
It then opens up, but soon aborts with:
Writing: /tmp/blender.crash.txt
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
I can post the blender.crash.txt file but I’m guessing there’s no real point and that I need a newer computer.
Is that correct?
Thanks for any help.

Hello
do you really need 2.7? Try 2.69 maybe?
Or just keep 2.5?
Me, I’m still using 2.49!
Bye
p.s. You can try some newer 2.7 version from Graphicall.org, maybe?

yes.

basically.

I guess you need and time to get into 64 bits
now a day you can get very nice PC 64 with latest win around $600
unless you need to get a big one which may cost a lot more
depends on your needs and uses

happy bl

Yes. It’s likely that your CPU doesn’t have SSE2 support which is a requirement since Blender 2.65
