Unfortunately I can’t recall the its name (and I no longer have an older version to check), but it used to allow you to select vertices/edges/faces on the other side of the object. At the moment I can only select those right in front.

After a closer look, I noticed the “Snap onto itself (editmode)” button uses exactly the same icon 
I don’t see the “Snap onto itself (editmode)” button in your screenshot. Are you using 2.70 too?
Well, it’s good to confirm it was still there.

I must say, sometimes the “Limit selection to visible” is there, and others is not 
It is there alright, when in editmode, only.
The icon isn’t our best choice though, I agree.
Any ideas?
I should’ve been more clear with my comment. I did mean while in Edit mode.
I’ll try to reproduce the situation. And take it from there.
