Noob question about UV unwrapping

I am still trying to get the hang of Blender but there are still some things I just don’t understand about it this question is similar to my previous one I asked a few months ago, What I need to know is say I create a high poly mesh in a different program like 3D coat and unwrap it in that program does the unwrap file become an image file like .bmp .jpg etc? Or does the unwrap data become part of the mesh when I export it as an .OBJ?? When I import the file into Blender does the mesh have to be unwrapped again in Blender. Or does the unwrap process only happen once which ever program are working initially?

the uv map is “saved” inside the obj file , so you only need to do it once
