UV Map Only Visible When Entire Mesh Is Selected

I’ve been unwrapping some UVs (the model isn’t important, it’s more of an interface issue) but for whatever reason, the UVs only show up in the image editor when I have the entire mesh selected. This is making it impossible to see the live unwrap and is making the whole process really awkward.

I’ve tested some other .blend files and it’s happening in them as well.

In case I didn’t explain very clearly here is an example with the default cube, as you can see the map only shows when the entire mesh is selected.

Some help would be really appreciated.
