No Self Shadowing in Blender Internal

In Blender Internal is it possible to turn off self-shadowing so, objects will not cast shadows onto themselves but, they will have shadows cast on them by other objects? I’m wondering because I plan on using this element in a non-photo-realistic rendering style. If it is not directly possible could you give suggestions for a node set up.

You can use lamps with buffer shadows and for the material of the object you don’t want to cast shadows turn off ‘Cast Buffer Shadows’ in the material / shadows panel
or
You can use lamps with ray trace shadows and for the material of the object you don’t want to cast shadows turn off ‘Traceable’ in the material / options panel
