Ghost/Aerogel Material

I’m trying to become more familiar with Blender’s new material engine, but I’m not sure how to do this or that.

I’m looking for tips/guides on how to create the following material (in 2.7):

  • Project a normal from the surface, inwards, until it hits another surface. The longer this normal, the more opaque the origin point on the surface is. Doesn’t have to be light-dependant/ray-traced.

I’m trying to create an aero-gel like material, translucent at smaller cross-sections.

Any help is appreciated!

I think ramp nodes are used for that. also there is a thread on X-ray material, that was very recent, probably still on the page. It had some interesting examples of cycles materials which you may find helpful.

I’ll check those out, thanks!
