It only took a decade or so to get it done, but Autodesk beat Blender to it again Correct me if I am wrong, but do we have tools like that?
On the surface it looks pretty similar to this:
Face snapping + align rotation
Admittedly I donât think it works perfectly, but Iâm pretty sure itâs been there for years.
Edit:
Actually, setting it to âActiveâ instead of âClosestâ seems to give slightly better results; still not perfect, but better.
I donât know if we have tool exactly like that.
But we have Snap ToolâŚ
I knew about those - works fine for vertices in Edit mode. Doesnât work (works improperly = doesnât work) in Object mode unfortunately.
What? Cones above are separate objectsâŚ
But it depends where Object center is (for this kin of action it should be at bottom).
Can someone share the blend file where face snapping + align rotation doesnt work ?
I can record video as soon as I finish converting current one, where I grab cube and try placing it on UV sphere. If you say center should be placed onto surface, then half of the cube should stick out from the sphere. Yet, it doesnât.
I think he ment object origin place.
When you have finished that video, please share that blend file also.
Well, just learned something new today I had to press that button, âProject individual elements on the surface of other objectsâ to get it working. However, the cube doesnât âfollowâ normal vector of the surface itâs being snapped to.
WARNING: Boring soundless video
It will follow, set âAlign rotation with the snapping targetâ.
Set also object origin to bottom of the object, -Z axis.
If you watch my video, you can see I have that button activated and it doesnât do anything. I donât need objects origin at the bottom, I need it where it is now. It shouldnât make any difference for orienting along normals.
Share the blend file then Usually errors are between chair and the desk, not always.
Its difficult to see correct alignment when object origin is middle of the object.
The problem is that itâs set to âClosestâ , set it to another of the setting and it should work correctly
Here with center (so it use the object âcenterâ, meaning the origin)
edit : after trying the blend, yes i was right, try Center instead of Closest
(and disable the âproject individual element on âŚâ button
Or Active works too. Thanks.
Yay, now I can be more efficient when making levels
I watched the ânewâ object place tool in Max a couple of weeks ago, and I recall thinking âThey did not have object snapping like that before? Blender has had that for ages.â.
Nothing new under the sun.
Yep, that helped Thx.
