Best method to make fog?

What I’m looking for is fog that reacts to light. Like when you have a light spot, around that light there is no fog visible. But in the darkness or moody darkness there is fog three increments away from the player. I tried using mist but it doesn’t see to work well in the BGE. What is the best way of doing this?

Alpha planes, I find, work fine.

Like with fog textures?

In the diffuse ramp shader there is an energy based ramp option, maybe you should play with it. Also you can make fog with nodes.

Can you use nodes in the GE?
