Automatically save render layers to file

Is there a way to save each render layer out to a file without having to connect each layer to the composite (or viewer) node and save each one that way?

Connect each to a File Output node http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/User:Phonybone/MultiFileOutputNode

Oh… I feel sheepish. I never noticed that node. Thank you.

Also consider the MultiLayer OpenEXR output-file format, which automatically saves multiple layers of information (in very high numeric resolution) into a single file. It may (or may not …) be applicable to your case. But it sure is handy when it is.

I tried the OpenEXR MultiLayer output file format, but it said something about there being no MultiLayer EXR image to save. I researched a bit and it seems it’d be pretty useful. When do you find it most useful and when do you choose not to use it? Would you use it for animation or just use a File Output node in the compositor?
