What Operating System do you use Blender on?

The point of this thread is to collect an approximation of useful data. Such data can be of interest for developers to decide on which systems to support.

Since this topic is about which OS you use Blender on, I’d kindly request moderators to not move this thread into Off-Topic Chat, as has been the case with similar topics in the past.

Please select the Operating System that you spend the most time using Blender on. That is, if you use e.g. Windows for gaming, but Linux for Blender, select your respective Linux version.

As such a topic is almost guaranteed to devolve into an OS-flamewar, I’d also kindly request moderators to tolerate this until a decent amount of data is collected.

If you have any useful information as to why you use a certain OS, please post it here, as well!

LINUX, to War!!! XD
One OS to Rule Them All!!!

I used to run it on WinXP (32bit), but moved to Linux Mint 15 (64bit) once i started hitting the 2GB memory limit when rendering heavier scenes. Also, Cycles runs faster on Linux.

I’m on Linux, it’s quite faster and more customizable than Win or Mac. Blender (and other apps like Mari or Nuke) seems to be more performant and stable on Linux as well.

Mostly Linux. I also use Win 7 64 bit but Blender’s performance is worse on Windows so I try to avoid it unless I need to be jumping back and forth between Blender and another Windows only application.

If that is for a statistics, how do i vote for several OSes?

So, a legitimate question for those using 32-bit OSes… Why?

Not using 32 bit myself but if you have 4gb ram or less, there’s very little point in 64 bit.

Currently using Windows 7 64bit. But I am looking to move over to Linux fairly soon. I am not liking the development Windows has going right now, seems to be very anti-control.

Credit where credit is due: From what I’ve seen the superior performance of Cycles is due to GCC, not Linux per se. Stability is of course something that is hard to substantiate.

You don’t. Please vote for the OS you use Blender on the most.

I disagree. There are some minor performance improvements to be had in some cases, but most importantly all applications benefit from the larger address space. For instance, Blender on 32-bit will simply crash when it runs out of its 2-3GB allowance.

Me?, because I didn’t have time to switch yet… Plus, my others main softwares only exist in 32bits OS, so…

Win 8.1 x64 on my laptop, and Win 7 x64 on the desktop. I voted Win 8 though since most of my modeling is done on the laptop.

How much time do you need? No one has made 32-bit only hardware in years. Also, 32-bit only software (like ZBrush, for example) runs just fine under 64-bit OS.

My Eeeepc is 32 bit and I won’t throw perfectly good teaching PCs away just because they’re old and yes, I also have a 64bit quadcore. But my old Amd 2000 runs nicely.

So the answer is that the old stuff runs and runs and runs. It just blows a power supply every now and then ( :

I’m not sure what at max a hundred or two Blenderartist registered members replying to that poll, can be really called representative on what kind of OS are used by the majority of the Blender users, all it will do is give an idea on what kind of OS the people that replied to that poll are using even if they’re not even using Blender.

If in 2007 Blender was downloaded 800.000 times, while of course some people may have downloaded more than once, as it has gained in recognition and popularity a lot since 2007, and if we keep in mind that some countries since 2007 have emerged as big 3D work poles that level of budget made Blender even more interesting, i’m sure the real amount of Blender users must be close to that number or at least half of it.

So to make that poll relevant , a good idea would be to make it more accessible, maybe post it on every possible Blender related boards on the world, or at least make mention on every major Blender websites (so people reading could report that poll to the boards they frequent)
That’s something hard to do anyways, as the most successfull Blender poll, " the great blender survey " from Blenderguru had only a bit more of 3400 answers sometime in 2010.
Maybe trying to use one of the poll specialised websites like Andrew Price has done could be a better idea than making it on a board in which you need to register an account to reply. But i never used one so can’t say if there are some good free ones that does not limit the participation unless you get some paid service

Windows 7 64bit.

Eventually I´ll move to a 64bit Linux distro.
Nothing beats “just as good or better for free”!

It will just depend on having all necessary drivers etc.

Because it’s what I have

You rebel :RocknRoll:

No offense, but I prefer not to respond to polls that don’t tell me what the information collected will be used for, seeing as how in very recent forum history statistics can be easily turned to causes that I might find myself opposed to. Can’t help but think there might be others similarly wary. Good luck.

Linux 64bit cuz it’s damn stable, fast and it’s not like windows.
