Wasp Gunner (WIP)

So it has been approximately 5 months since a first heard about Blender and CG Art. I have spend lots of time to figure out how this amazing software works, and boy it can be frustrating time to times. Anyhow, a mate posted a picture on facebook that I really liked that he had drawn and I thought it would be really cool to have that wasp in 3D. I asked him if it was alright if I took his picture and give it a try to model it. He thought it was cool and even provided me with a profile pic I could use as a more reliable reference.

I have always been scared of starting a WIP thread here, since I am quite new on this and it gives me a bit of a pressure to not only finish the project but also do it well. But I have seen lots of good people here who really helps out and I hope I can get some good of having a WIP.

Right, so I spent the weekend to start my first sculpt pass. There is still some smoothing left before I will try to with the retopology. witch I´m very nervous about since I have never done that before, so all tips are appreciated. For the sake of my hardware I decided to do two sculpting passes, one for the body and after retopology of that I will sculpt the gas mask. and then on to model the wings and last of all, and probably the hardest, the mini gun.

I included the concept art as well so you can see what I´m aiming for. Comment, critics, and tips are very appreciated.

Cheers!

Bring the chest in a little as you see in the picture. Thow it doesn’t have to be exactly like the picture I still think it would look better. HAH, can’t wait to see the wasp wearing the gas mask holding the mini gun. Would you like me to do the mini gun or the mask?

Very cool! Impressive skills in such short time.

@Ryfer88: I will try to bring the chest area in a little when the retopology so I can easily do this with proportion tool. You are always welcome to do the mini gun or the mask and show me and I can see how you did it, however it will not be used in my image since the purpose with this project is for me to gain experience.

@7over6: Cheers! Even though I might been quite a short time I strive to spend at least 4 hours every day working in blender. sometime I do less, but mostly I spend more time :stuck_out_tongue:

right, soon time for daytime job, bloody boring, but after that I will continue with the wasp.

So I finished the first sculpt pass last night, and Ryfer, you were right, brought in the chest a bit. I spent several hours to trying to start with retopology :stuck_out_tongue: and I´m not good at it. After tonight I have got a bit more in to it and its starting to take shape, but it probably will take quite a while for me. Better get it done, here is latest render on the sculpt.

A upload if the wireframe I´v done so far. I saw a pole when I did the render, gonna sort that out. I´m struggling a bit with this and don’t really know what I´m doing, so all tips I can get is welcome.

I would recommend using a much lower density, if you wanted to keep modeling. Like half the number of vertices on the body pieces.
The arms and legs are perfect and I wouldn’t touch them.

The body quite good just dense, and if you wanted to be done with modeling, and begin texturing then you certainly could be and i would recommend just leave it alone as its more then good and i wouldn’t worry about the poles, but if you wanted to continue to model then I would definitely remesh it or something, but to be honest I wouldn’t touch it. I would say quit while your ahead, if you want more detail latter a displacement map or even a bumb map would work better for fine detail.

Cheers for the tip Captain. I have been doing several attempts during the week, and I must say, its really hard to not get it dense without a lot of quirkiness. I thought I could upload a .blend so if anyone is interesting in taking a look feel free! all tips is appreciated. I removed the actual sculpt to reduce the file size.

-EDIT- there is two attempt, one in layer 1 and the latest one in layer 2

I would really say not to change a thing. What you have is very good. Looking at the concept art I have no idea what you want to change. I find at this point in a model, things are pretty much set in stone without “invasive surgery”, which often times leads to days of work which at best gets you back where you started.

If i were you i would move on to the next step. I would make the rest of the wasp first, the gun the mask and such then before texturing if your still not happy, which i think maybe when you have the rest of it, you’ll see how good it is, but you can always make changes then.

I’m very impressed with the level of detail you have and the overall look. Seriously though make the mask, don’t sweat the small stuff, put it together first then worry about the fine detail.

So I´m finally done with the retopology for the body, it took a very long time indeed. I guess I can do some more tweaking on it and I probably will, but now I´m so tired of it and will start of with the gas mask.

A render of the new mesh.

The gas mask is on place. some high detail sculpting is still remaining as well as straps and similar.
