View Full Version : Short animation: Ton Roosendaal Vs The Evil Sea Creature

G'day mates,

here's a small animation I made a few days before the BConf-deadline, so it could have its premiere there at the Art Festival. Some of you might have seen it on 1 of the conference video's (or the conference itself of course).

I only used old models. Because the timeframe I had to finish it the pacing isn't quite there yet. But still fun, I hope.

>>Please right-click, save target as<< (http://sago.nl/movies/TonVsTESC.avi) XviD, 6,5 Mb

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: for those who don't know who Ton Roosendaal is (shame on you), he is the creator of Blender. He is the man. And the Vroom-jacket actually exists.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And again
a big thanks to a very special man
for hosting the video, as much as he can
the one and only super Wu-Man

first post!!!

Can't wait to watch, downloading right now :D

Edit: Great Work Sago, I thought I'd never hear that "Hi my name is Ton Roosendaal and I pronounce Blender as Blender" again,

animation was very good. T
he story wasn't too deep though, but I don't think that was what you were aiming for anyway.

Again, Great Work Sago!

Wow! Thats awesome. If it weren't for the cartoony look of the hands holding the toys, I would have thought its a real video.

Did you render this with Yafray or Blender internal?

In either case, your lighting setup is absolutely awesome once again!

You really should do a tutorial on lighting.

First of, I never had the chance to say congrats on winning the suzanne award. So, Congratulations.
Man, you must be head over heels in love with suzanne to make those cool animations :D. They're simple and yet so entertaining to watch. I've got to second ChojinDSL's request for your lighting setup (or is it one of your secrets just like the skin shader ;) ). Solid work man, I couldn't say less than that. And oh, 5 stars from me.

Not as good as your Man in Man. Much too slowly paced, if you ask me (too
long pauses).

But defidently worth 4 stars! Good work as always!

Hey Sago,
I saw the movie on Friday at the conference, I think you were there too. Else I'll tell you, we laughed out loud!
PS: for people who don't know, the text "Ton" is saying is from an old tutorial(lip-sync) that does not exist anymore I think

Still can't get round the baby voice in the beginning without laughing.
Just seems like he's thinking too slow. Too much time between he's actions and reactions.

28-Oct-06, 11:51
I actually think this beat man in man- the pauses inbetween everything is what made it funny in my opinion. The animation was really good, never a moment where the animation stopped totally (this happened a couple of times in man in man, that kinda ruined it for me).

What made this animation perfect were the movements of the hands.
Incredibly lifelike, like something straight out of Toy-Story!

I agree that it is a little slow, but still this is much funnier than Man in Man (though I love both) You really are amazing with your style. You should do a full length feature, just to see what would happen.

PS: for people who don't know, the text "Ton" is saying is from an old tutorial(lip-sync) that does not exist anymore I think

Oh really? I didn't know that. Actually that tutorial would then be itself be a parody of another voice over. Years ago when I installed my first ever Linux (Red Hat 5.2 at the time) the soundcard setup was successful if you could hear "My name is Linus and I pronounce Linux as Linux" :)

haha, that was great fun, that trash man really cracks me up when he crashes his car into the wall, haha, that was awsome!

some of my crits on this work
*when the fat guy holding the dead chicken walks in and says "billys dead, billys dead" i didnt really believe billy was dead, so maybe you need to hire better voice actors?
*the fireworks secne was amazing, i crapped my pants, cleaned them off, watched it again and crapped all over again
*it was all great fun, but i though the message about staying in school was lost when the chickens are spanking each other, do you think this is the right kind of message to send to children?

all in all i give you one star...............because i thought it was great and horrible at the same time.......

Thanks all for the replies, means a lot to me. The pacing (especially the pauzes in between) was one of the things I thought needed more attention (which didn't get it because the deadline). A bit surprising that some of you thought it was fine. Though I believe there are still a lot of things that can be improved, it's also a matter how you look upon this kind of weird humor. I think.

Alex G - you're right, haha, wasn't really aiming for a deep story. Good thing you noticed that. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/sago/Pics/Emoticons/smile.gif

ChojinDSL - thanks. It's the internal render. Yafray would be insane for an amimation, no matter how short it is.

Husam - thanks man. Not much to say about the lighting. 2 spotlights with Shadow Buffer hanging in the air, 1 lamp at the bottom for the neglected lower parts of the scene and AO with some gradient worldcolours. Easy as that.

AniCator - I was at the BConf on saturday, so unfortunately I missed its premiere. Indeed, the lipsync-tutorial doesn't really exist anymore, but there are still some fragments to be found online. And of course, the soundfile was the hardest to find.

Fellow Suzanne Award Winning Rocketman - your comparison seems a bit too much, but thanks. Movement of one hand (+ lower arm) is actually quite easy, because it's just one string of bones. And there's also 1 rule I use for myself: even if something doesn't move, there should always be some movement. Even if it's just the tiniest bit.

Radscientist - sorry man, no subtitles. Not much to hear anyway. Just the sound of a guy going "TADAAAAH" when Ton comes up, a "Hmmmm" when he's just about to push the button, Ton's voice going "Hi my name is Ton Roosendaal and I pronounce Blender as Blender" after pushing, a "WAAAUUW!" while shaking Ton, a squeaking sound everything that green toy gets... uhm... squeezed, a "HAHA" after hitting the green toy and an "OH NOO" after losing Ton's head and facing (?) the viewer. That's all.

Eaglebreath - sure Ton has an accent, but there's something else that makes his voice so weird... I mean funny, uhm... I mean cool. Dunno what it is. It's like he just uses his jaw for speaking, instead of using his entire mouth. Anyway, it's pretty funny...... I mean cool.

Super Wu-Man - yeah, I just.... what?...... ah, that's so.... hmmm..... whatever, man.

shirokoff - perhaps I'll do that some day. But I'll tell, it won't make you happy.

RobertT - thanks man, me love you long time.

Bart - thanks man, me love you long time.

Hi Sago,

I saw this anim on the conference video and found it really great, very different from the man in man but personnaly I found this one even better from the rendering point of vue, as mentioned by other, it is a bit slow but great anyway.

I've just watched the short and I found it hilarious! Animation is perfect!
The only thing that kind of "annoyed" me is the poor quality of the voice recording (all the TADAAAH and OH NO things). It sounds really muffled, and it's sad compared to the quality of animation.
So if you like, I propose to re-make it, provided I get the other sounds FX.

Be well

EDIT : better idea, I can record the voice only, and if you find it suitable, you can reedit the sound track :p

eaglebreath
31-Oct-06, 07:35
why everyone blame those pauses!?! I think that animation is better if it is more realistic and in real life things are slower, than in animations, you know what I mean.

Sago
31-Oct-06, 08:52
Thanks all.

Jogai - the next orange team? If only....... I prefer pink a bit more though.

Reywillow - yeah, the voice recording is kinda bad. My computer records a terrible static, no idea where it's coming from. So there's a lot of filtering I need to do, which isn't really great for the quality either.
Anyway, I won't be working on this anymore, so no need to do any voice recording yourself.... besides, what if you sound like Sean Connery, I would never use it then, that's for sure.... I mean, this animation with a Sean Connery voice, that would be just plain silly. But for future projects I'll try to put more effort into the sounds and voices.

No, you wrong. Timing is totally bad. Cartoonish effect is mainly exaggeration.

This overload of "good Blender feeling" begins to silly me. The "gimmick" of this community!

Oh yeah, gotcha', you're behaving like that to be sure he will make a tutorial . pitiful, even not motivated to do their own tries.
Rather than to make tutorials which you don't even follow; :p, i prefer he spends his time by making cool and better short.

Anyway, i hope, maybe in the future, we'll put blender in the background and put focus on stories and arts.

Yo Meltdown,

I do agree with you on some points, but no, not all.

Like I said in the first post, this was something I made very quickly (hence the questionable pacing), but you also have to keep in mind I made it specially to be shown at BConf '06. Everyone who doesn't know Blender and Ton, will most likely don't like this short, or at least don't understand it. But I'm convinced many Blenderheads will like this, in some way.... cause hell, I know my public.

I think your biggest mistake was some of your remarks on other people's comments. There were many subjective comments, based on people's own personal opinion and sense of humor.

BgDM for example, if you fart, he'll laugh, no doubt about that. Many other people would be just disgusted by your fart. But that's just BgDM's sense of humor, you CANNOT touch that, you CANNOT say that's wrong.

But that's what you did. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you on some points, but you seem to have missed the small line between objective and subjective statements. Some people like English humor, some don't. Nothing you can do about that. It's their own personal opinion. Which makes your personal opinion about the short just as valid.

Anyway, i hope, maybe in the future, we'll put blender in the background and put focus on stories and arts.
Arts? Naah, not with Blender anyway. Just bloody brilliant entertainment.... perhaps also some controversial stuff.... that's all.... yeah, you know what I mean.....

Great work Sago! I saw it at bconf also, and anyone else who was there will verify that this animation had the audience laughing the most of any shown. I personally thought the pauses were perfect, but I think the atmosphere of watching it from the back row of a full auditorium had a lot to do with that.
So, I'd say you succeeded.

EDIT: Just read a few of the later posts and had to add a couple of comments:

Knowledge of Blender history may give an added bonus but it's not essential to get something from it. My wife doesn't give two hoots about Blender but she got a giggle out of this. I'll show the kids tomorrow.
I thought it was slow before the head kick - but then the long pause made absolute sense.

It might not be perfection on a stick but it's pure Sago and as he said, made with a purpose and within a timeframe. It is what it is - and it's excellent. More!

"squeak squeak!" :)

LGM
07-Nov-06, 00:26
I hate Sago. He beat me in the Suzanne Awards (this means WAR!). He got his first animation in the Blender Forums Gallery. But I still laughed at this. The pacing was slow in some places, and my reasoning is that I just got slightly bored waiting for something to happen. But that's been explained away, so there it is. It's not totally bad (in my opinion) but it's not perfect, and Sago gave us a disclaimer saying as much. So I wasn't disappointed.

(You use a renderfarm! That's your secret! That's why this is so hot. There's no skill, just a renderfarm!!! It's a PLOT!)

Was that "Ooooooh" in the beginning from a game called BZflag? Sorry if that's already been asked, but I'm not reading 3 pages of Sago praise, thank you very much.

Like Andy said, having knowledge of Blender and some Blender history helps the funnys much more better, but it was made for Blender peoples at the Blender conference. So hey, perfect.

I disagree, Andy, with the long pause after the headkick. I knew the squeak squeak was going to come, and I wanted it to come, and I was waiting for it to come, and I had to wait a long time. (Unless you were referring to the "Oh no.")

Anyway, Sago, chew on all these differing opinions, and as my co-worker says, "Next time do it perfect." It's that simple.

I disagree, Andy, with the long pause after the headkick. I knew the squeak squeak was going to come, and I wanted it to come, and I was waiting for it to come, and I had to wait a long time. (Unless you were referring to the "Oh no.")I can't believe that you not only disagreed with me but felt compelled to make that disagreement public.

I was really only referring to the pause before the head kick. Sitting, waiting, wondering then "whack". As for the pause after the kick - well, let's see. We could get all analytical and try to view this through the eyes of the puppeteer - not Sago but the person whose hands we can see. We could easily assume that, like us, he too was wondering what might come next but then, lost for ideas he turned and squeaked. Clearly the boy in the animation is not firing on all cylinders... one straw short of a haybale, not the brightest bulb in the box and for all we know, he may be the successful result of an experiment in artificial stupidity. In fact, I think it's Super Wu-Man. Do we really expect him to act as we might act in a similar situation? Would we even find ourselves in a similar situation? (Not me, I don't have a squeaky fish or Ton doll).

We could analyse this as others analysed Elephants Dream and rather than excuse or explain the long pauses, elevate them as artistic elements that challenge the viewer (or the viewer's patience) and leave it for them to find their own meaning in those audio-visual vacuums that bracket the main action. :)

But sod it all. I just liked it - even with those overly-long, incredibly boring pauses. Except for the faults, it was perfect - and no one can disagree with that.

I just wanted Sago to have multiple views and takes on his work. It has nothing to do with my public denial of AndyD. I'm keeping that out of this thread, you understand?

Well sod it all, I liked it too! And I had a harder time liking it, since I hate Sago's guts. I went into it wanting to hate it. But that doesn't change the fact that I was bored during the pauses! Geeze, I come out of hybernation to offer an opinion and I get slammed for over-analyzing. I gotta choose a different thread. But in all seriousness, I do agree with you, AndyD. Except for it's faults it is perfect.

Absolutely outstanding animation.
As others said before it was hard to believe this was actually CG, only hints I noticed for this were the hands and the background, which are so cartoonish.

The story wasn't very deep, as said before also (kinda everything was said before :( ), but still I can't get my mouth closed by thinking of the visual quality of this.

I think this will indeed be a great benefit in showing the strenghts of Blender.

(Not to hijack the thread - but I haven't seen anything from you for a while. Have I not been paying attention?)

I'm totally hijacking this thread. It's much too long anyway. Nah, I've been practicing in secret. I got one thing in the WIP, but that fell like a load of bricks (unlike Sago's work which flies on wings of praise) to page 2. Mind, I'm not complaining, but you asked.

And I love you, you sillybuns. haha. You wanna give it a try next year again? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/sago/Pics/Emoticons/eyebrow.gif

HA! "Try" he says. Next year there will be no try, so enjoy the monkey while you can, you cult-pushing, over-analyzed, over-praised . . . . baby-avatar! My avatar glowers at you.

OVER-analyzing??? I didn't even use the word "juxtaposition". Any serious critique has to use "juxtaposition". I did feel that it was an interesting exploration of the genre...

I showed it to my son last night and he couldn't stop laughing, he re-played it a few times and laughed more each time. My daughter took one look and said "that's weird". So I guess it is a fart joke :)

The part I liked best was the lip-syncing. That was very well handled.

Haha, I loved it, the pauses seem to make it, whats the word I need....Almost childish in the sense of humour. (which sure ain't bad)

Five stars from me :)

Was that "Ooooooh" in the beginning from a game called BZflag? Sorry if that's already been asked, but I'm not reading 3 pages of Sago praise, thank you very much.

Thats what I thought too, I play that so much its been drilled into my head :D

Same here, I though the pauses made it a lot funnier in a strange and absurd way. The low quality of the sound recording also added to that. Sometimes it's things that were not intentionnal that makes stuff a lot more original and "stylish".

So yeah, good work !

I agree. The sound quality I thought just gave it a more home-made air which is very suitable for the subject. Even if this was accidental, it still worked really well. Great job, by the way!

Hi there!
I also love your shorts, sago! I watched this one, shaked my head, thought to myself: What a weeeeeeired peice of....... and realized that I just couln't stop watching it again and again! Same thing for "Man in man"!
Somehow you put a mimic in the puppet's faces without even animating them! You look at the monster's stupid-evil face and have to laugh! You know it's a puppet and it wouldn't make a more intelligent face in a thousend years.... but still you're laughing at this still frozen face watching Ton's head fall down!
One thing though: The last squeeze of te monster seems to be a bit unrealistic to me. It seems to "optically squeeze" rather than performing an "elastical deformation", ... or - in other words - the squeeze seems to be "flat" rather than "3d"... Hm.... you know what I mean?

Ah yeah, the request of the short script of what is told in the short... I think no one did it yet?

At the appearance of the green text: A really awfully recorded blood-freezing (not really) "Booooohooooooo" (like a ghost)
(Appearance of Ton)
Tadaaaaaaa! (dull voice from the puppet player)
... hmmmmmm..... (searching the button on Ton's Body)
(pushed button, badly recorded voice) Hello, I'm Ton Roosendaal, and I pronounce Blender as `Blender`
(shaking Ton) Wooow! (slightly eval voice)
Squeeze-squeeze!! (sound as from a rubber-duck)
Squeeze-squeeze!!
(After hitting the monster)
(pause)
Haaa-haaaa! (VERY VERY childish)
(pause)
(Head off)
("facing" <----- hm... bodying, the face is gone! :-)) OH NO!
Sqeeze squeeze

That`s one damned interesting dialoge, huh? Worth an Oscar!!!

Hi there! I also love your shorts, sago!

I'll leave Sago to respond to that

Worth an Oscar!!!

Not an Oscar, but definitely a Fozzie, Kermit or maybe a Snuffleupagus.

*Snickers*

Anyways, nice animation. It did make me laugh. The models were really good, but i thought the sound could have been just a little better (even if the low quality adds to the style).

As far as I know, Quicktime Player is a free download and works well on Windows. I don't know if it's available for Linux but mplayer or VLC Player are.

Went back to take a look at this, and it looks like the file is broken. It won't play like it did, and when I download, it says the file needs "to be repaired". I click repair, and tells me that "The repairs have failed." Is this happening to others? And if not, can someone post it on Vimeo? I remember this being a great short.

Sorry to bump, but I wanted to say that this is my kid's favourite animated Blender film! they even prefer it over BBB! I've got it on my ipod to give them a giggle when we are out. They wish there was a sequel.
