View Full Version : Crashed Ship
Hi guys,
It's been a while since I've posted something here, but I finally finished one worth while (and guess what, it's another ship :P). Made with Blender and Gimp, and took about 3 months on and off (mostly off). There are some things I wish I could change, but I've learned alot and think it's time to move on to the next project.
Any comments or critiques are more than welcome!

Holy Crap that is tha ShIz!!!!!!11!!!!1one!!11!
Really good work, vegetation is great !
I especially like fact that the ship is a kind of plain old shuttle utility type rather than a sleek fighter thingy. Great work.

Amazing. I love the tree on the left. It's beautifully modeled and textured. Same with the cracked glass.

Nice post-pro aswel, I like the glow on top of that ship, give me the feelig i'm in halo again.. but next gen for that matter ^^
Jacco;
Emmmm... some of the background trees are a little off in the texturing... some of it looks a little sharp (esp. grass highlights)
But I'm stretching here, it looks really good.

Holy cow!
This is amazing! I've seen a lot of great and awesome works and it's been a while since i've been this AWED by a blender image! I mean WOW. The details are extreme. The textures on the ships are perfect. The ground, grass, bark and trees are incredible. The lighting is right on too. This is defenitely going to the gallery!
Edeehem
That is friggin sweet. Some rendering artifcats on some of the edges, but other than that, really well done.

How many polygons is that is how long did it take to render, the detail level is quite incredible all the way to the foilage on the ground.

remember this was post-prod!(still, w8, eaven more of a wow!)
Hey guys,
Wow! I get home from my soccer game and pop up the thread. . .
Anyway um. . .some facts about the rendering. There are about 6 million verts during render time, and I had 6 different passes composited together in Gimp.
Everything is modeled except the mini tree/bushes, which were generated with Plant Studio 2 (forgot to mention that in the first post). Some of the overhead branches were 2d images on planes, too. Most of the grass was made with Blender's particle system, and the larger foliage was hand modeled.
ajc158: Yeah, you're right, the background trees are a little off in the texturing. One of the things I should change if I ever revisit this.

Why not use Blender's compositor like me, RobertT and several others because it can put together layers?
6 million verts, that's at least between 3 and 4 million faces, my computer would just barely be able to handle that.
WOW..... Amazing! Thats all i can say.
It's absoluely superb!!!

I agree with others, this is great peace of work! Details on the front tree are amazing, rear trees do look little off but nothing to wory about!

Really nice, I feel like I've just stumbled onto it! Any chance of a wire for the different elements?
It's amazing that none of the trees were snapped off in the fall to ground ;)

Amazing textures.
And look at those leaves.
Would be great if there was more damage to the hull. Like that wing (?) to the front, if it was broken backwards or smt.
A ship in a crash landing usually doesn't fall from the sky top down but makes a dive through the trees.

new desktop image 4 me. That image is crazy good.

VERY NICELY DONE!

Hey guys,
There are some very helpful comments, thanks alot for all of those. :)
Cyborg Dragon: I didn't use blender's compositor for two reasons; first, I'm not familiar with it, so I would have had to take the time to learn a bunch of things I can already do in GIMP in a few seconds; second, although Blender's compositor is very poweful, it doesn't have all the tools I need to get the job done. Things like painting shadows and highlights, cloning areas to blend the layers together, etc., all need a third party app. to accomplish.
David Mcsween and vliegtuig: You are both right, some more accurate signs of damage and decay to both the ship and environment would make the scene more believeable.
Here is a little behind the scenes for anyone interested. I had to render in layers (my computer couldn't handle everything rendering together), so I don't have one un-GIMPed render to show you. Here are some of the passes, though:

As everyone stated:
Really great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just one comment:
Ship looks like it had crashed quite a time ago, so nature has grown back, but there could still be some trees which where broken.... during the accident, like an old fallen tree or such things....
Just for the next time...

They should have super wu man as one of the base shapes..
ADD -> MESH -> SUPER WU-man
Been skipping back to this piece. Just amazing and is sure to do wonders for blender
This looks really very cool, but after struggling for a bit I found a tiny error thingy. On the right (ship's right, our left) wing, some of the moss, especially on the corner looks a bit to much like it's been painted instead of modelled. But remember, I was struggling to find that! This is brilliant and is now my new desktop (which changes quite a lot)!

Only read about half the comments so please forgive me if I'm being redundant!
The trees, foliage and light just blew me away! I don't know that I've ever seen anything quite so convincing.
And the freakin ship! What a sight.
So here's my beef, and it's a small one. I think that had the ship crashed long enough ago for the forest to have grown up around it (as opposed to the trees having suffered damage when the ship crashed), the ship would be a lot more buried than it is. (I'm a student of archeology.) It's just a continuity thing, doesn't detract from the image's initial impact.
I don't believe I'll ever be able to do anything that even comes close to this, I'm awed. (Saved it for wallpaper. :))

I just came back to mention that after reviewing all the incredible images I saved tonight that you folks've made in Blender, this is without doubt my favorite. Possibly has something to do with having been reading SF for 40+ years but even more with having tried my hand at 3d modeling (Bryce). I'd give my left nut to be able to make something like this! I'm gonna show it to everyone. I'd buy you all the beer or whatever you wanted, if I could.

Along with the windows on the spaceship. ;) The ship looks great but at first I thought the crack was a mini galaxy.
Wow ! Very nice image. Both ship and vegetation are amazing, and the lighting is great.
That's fine art !

Someday i need to figure out how to model plantlife like this. the ship is really sweet as well.
Looks like somebody is going to need alot of Aspirin after that faceplant into the windshield.
I don't have the patience to do images like this one.
I end up trashing about 85 % of my spacecraft models after about a week of work. Althought the one Iv'e been working on lately has some potential.
great attention to details. almost feel i'm there.
Best UV texturing I think I've ever seen.

@Obiwan_C (http://blenderartists.org/forum/member.php?u=4760)
how was the vegetation done? just gimp?
Yeah really great Obiwan_C. I also want to know how you made the vegetation (i.e. what where your particles settings). Being really critical here - maybe its just me but the grass looks slightly repetative in that they all seem to be facing the same way.

wow what a nice piece of art work. do you have a tuturial of any kind on how to start paictures like that?
Hey guys,
I'm thinking of doing a small making-of for this. I'll post it in this thread, so be looking for it in the near future.
The grass is Blender particles, all other foliage are actual meshes or alpha mapped planes.

You should remove the broken link.
Hi guys,
Sorry about the broken link, my domain expired and I haven't re-uploaded any of my old pictures. College will do that to you. The image is now hosted on ImageShack.
And sorry, that's as high-res a version as I have.

howd you make the vegatation?
Incredible details! This blows me away. If I force myself to offer some constructive crit, all I can say is that the leaves on the top of the cockpit window look a bit off. For some reason the reflection looks a bit too deep. But really I'm just looking for something to critique. Otherwise, I simply bow down before this image.

I only wish I could produce something half as good.
Incredible piece of work! Very inspirational in regards to what can be done in Blender and the Gimp.
Would you care to recount any of the techniques you used? Personally I'm interested in how you rendered the ship... What renderer did you use?

simple and brilliantly executed! 10 stars from me!

But presumably this is an alien forest where perhaps the trees spring up very quickly?
Very poetic image, very moving.
