I finally finished my first render of Sidi Bou Said (I'm planning more in a near future since this is such a beautiful town and a great source of inspiration)

http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/8936/sidibousaid5yr.th.jpg (http://slepnyrl-studios.atspace.com/SDN1.htm)

The white wall texture is hand painted in Gimpshop with a combination of textures found on mayang and accustudio and is a rather tedious process. The plants are made using arbaro and particules (grass in the bottom right) and the pots are modeled using the classic spin method (which lead to nice results). Finaly, the flowing and smooth metal forgery of the window and stair ramp were made using curves. The lighting in this scene is pretty straigh forward though. A single sun lamp oriented to match the one in the reference picture and a good amount of ambient occlusion. I did have a hard time rendering it as this scene is composed of more than a million vertices and that uses about 480mb of my 512mb ram memory...(in other words, my 2.8Ghtz almost locks up completely).

Thanks for taking a look and feel free to drop any comments/tips you may have as they are always appreciated,
Slep

This is the reference image I based most of my render on.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but are the plants in the pots alpha maps? Other than that it looks good! I can see this in a Postcard format.

Thanks JackJ,
The plants are actually 3d models made with arbaro and imported in Blender in .obj format. The fact you're asking if they are alpha maps makes me think they seems fairly realistic ;). I'll try this "post card" idea in gimpshop too.

good render, but it needs some work. Mainly the spec on the pots is too high...they look like they're enameled, but the texture on them isn't one that's usually indicative of enamel.....if you look at the reference pic again you'll notice that the pots have a very earthy, rough look.

Also, if you'll notice in your reference image, the stains on the wall facing the camera under the stairs have directionalized stain from water going off the sides of the steps. you have done some really good texture and modelling work in this one so far, but you haven't gone that final step with the little touches.

I particularly like the handrail and latticework/ironwork in the window. Excellent modelling!

This picture is nice. It seems awfully blurry, though.

Thanks guys.
>>Taladan, I'll admit I did rush the materials and texture a bit. I'll rework them when I have the time
>>henrymop, Thanks, I did add a minuscule blue in gimpshop because I liked the effect but I'll see what comes out of it without any

I'll make the update when I have the time
Thanks for stopping by

Hi ,

Yes this is a nice picture .
I've ever been 2 time to this beautiful town :p.
And i think i know where the shot have been take .:D

It's too bad that we can see that the wall on the side of the stairs use the same texture of the upper wall ...
The little palms in pots looks a bit weird , it's like they are just scaled down ...
especially on the first one at left wich is really thin .

Keep it up ...:)

hu ? yesterday i was thinking of doing a scene of sidi bou said too
Peace .

>>amuntianu (http://blenderartists.org/forum/member.php?u=14769) Thanks a lot
>>RobertT (http://blenderartists.org/forum/member.php?u=2954) Many thanks, I'm glad you feel the "serene" emotion I was trying to put in this image.
>>kaeru (http://blenderartists.org/forum/member.php?u=15361) I havnt had the luck to go to Tunisia yet but maybe some day :) . I'll probably take the comments made above and make the slight modifications that will improve the render. I might try changing the wall with the sea though. Well, I'll see. Oh and as I said in one of my post in the focused critique thread a while ago, Sidi Bou Said is a beautiful town and a great sources of inspiration. I wouldnt mind if you did one too :). I have already a fuzzy idea of what my next one will be

Thanks a lot for all the replies guys
