Rendered with blender internal, 3 area lights + AO. Lighting could be better but I don't know how to improve it.

Now that's a cool render, it's photorealistic but not perfect. You almost got it down though. The model itself is great and very detailed (which proves you researched your subject and worked with reference pictures :) ) My only crit would be the metal join from the disk to the sound exit cone (whatever it's called). It could use more smoothing.

The textures and materials are great too (but I don't like the wallpaper :X ). The wood is great in some areas but again, the change in wood color and type itsnt great. I suppose it was UV mapped?

Other than that, nice job!

Nice to see some work from you again ook. It has been way too long.

Great piece to come back with too. Really love the texturing on this one. Not sure about the lodspeaker portion there. I din't know they were made from wood. Though it looks great.

Thanks for your nice comments everyone. Criticism is also very welcome.

Do you mean the wood stripes in the horn? That's how it should be, it's manufactured by connecting stripes of wood to eachother in the wide end of the horn. :)

Thanks! I know I haven't been very active, though I did one commercial project with blender just recently. Basic industrial visualisation. I need to do a lot more projects in the future, need to practise to get better...

As for the loudspeaker/horn part, yes they were made from wood too. The one I used as a reference was wooden and was made in 1915.

Good work. How long did it take you?

The texturing is nice, but the wood texture on the horn looks slightly deformed/stretched.

For the lighting, you might want to illuminate the center of the phonograph more, aiming to lessen the shadows at the far end of the table.

The disk could be shinier.

Cool modeling and texturing on this one :)

As for lighting, I suggest you to put I few extra-lamps with the "No Diffuse" option activated. This way, you will only get the specualr highlights from these extra lamps, which should add a little light-depth to your otherwise great picture.

Cheers!

Thanks for commenting Aligorith.

It took me pretty long time to do considering it's for weekend challenge... Maybe 16 hours + couple of hours rendering.

You are right about textures on the horn, I should have used more time on that. Thanks for pointing it out. I generally spend too little time with uv-mapping and texturing.

Lighting was very hard somehow... I wanted to use AO, but it darkened the end of the table to almost totally black. I fixed it a bit when I composited the AO in but it's still pretty dark.

The disk was also really hard to make any shinier... I tried spec, raymir, different amounts of bump and colormaps. Heh.. It looks better in a close shot though:

Great tip, thanks! I didn't know you can do stuff like that too.

Hey, I love the detail in the closeup. :)

aah, I love these things. great work here. as said already, I agree it could use a little more "exciting" lighting... extra highlight lamp of some sort..
also the composition is a bit tight.. as much as I like the wallpaper, it somehow seems a bit out of place. the table seem to just be there, but at the same time it doesn't seem to be there.. in the same room.
maybe different angle, maybe pull back the camera.. maybe more "props", something on the wall, something on the table. it's a bit lonely there.

:)

Thanks for crits basse. I agree with you... those are just things I have to work to improve. I'll catch you on irc someday, maybe you can recommend a good book or two for me to learn some more about those topics. :)
