View Full Version : Old Becomes New Again (WC194)
This is my voluntarily non-participating interpretation of the "Old" theme for Blender Artists Weekend Challenge 194:
http://www.artofinterpretation.com/images/wc194-oldbecomesnewagain-byrjt2006.jpg
Blender 2.41 internal render + minor post work (border, contrast, slight DOF).
This was modeled quickly using "old school" methods of fractal subdivision and proportional editing. Two bump maps were painted for this. Total project time with render and post work came to around 2 hours.
Thank you for viewing my work,
RobertT
Really beautiful work Robert. This particular one became one of my favourits :) so simple but just .. beautiful.
Thanks
3D used for beautifully composed and executed art.
Its stunning. ****
Great to see some more works from you Robert =)
Lee
Such a shame about those bumps in the 'new' part, near the old/new border. The transition could have been more....
gradual(?).
The textures and the (whipcream)shape of the 'old' however, is very, very strong.
Sago
RobertT scores another speed homerun render.
A great render! My only crit, as Sago pointed out, is the transition between the bump and the smooth sphere. And the sort of "folds" that form in this transitional area. Otherwise its perfect.

i thought it was shedding its old skin to look like new again, and i think it looks great. good work, Robert
focus: Thank you, focus. I'm glad I decided this one should be compositionally simple.
LohnC: Bless you, Lee. Always an honor to hear from you. I'm eager to see new work from you too!
Sago: Thanks for the good feedback, Sago. The textural intensity and the sharp transitions were intentional. I wanted a near-stark contrast while still trying to strike a sort of Yin and Yang balance in both halves of the composition (alternating darkness/light, with some dark in the light and some light in the dark). At an earlier point in the bump map painting I had a much smoother transition near the old/new boundary, but it didn't work for me visually. I had also tried a blend texture set to stencil, and that didn't look natural either, so I decided to concentrate more on this type of look.
Slepnyrl: Haha, thanks! I'm trying to achieve definitive results sooner and better recognize the best stopping point in each project. That alone can be such a big challenge.
traitor: Yes, thank you :) That is along the lines of what I was going for.
RobertT
wow, a beautiful piece of art!

Really beautiful work Robert. This particular one became one of my favourits :) so simple but just .. beautiful.
Thanks
Double that.
Just...fabulous work. Two hours...wow. Here to: the fold in the border new/old is not so nice, beside that: incredible!
I would love to learn how to do such textures... And how to aply them to the model, just can't understand the UV thingies...
Fantastic work. Simple but stunning, as stated above. Great bump maps, too, and the color scheme really adds to the piece's mood.
I have to agree with the others, one of your strongest works to date. Really has a deeper meaning than what it initially looks like when you first view it.
I keep on staring at it, thinking what a beautiful piece of art.

really awsome stuff robertt,
i wonder how realistic it would look if you modeled a simple peice of drift wood and textured it the same way?
that would be awsome, and i also thought you could really use this type of modeling/textureing for a realistic mountian landscape,
very intresting stuff, by the way how does if feel knowing you will be defeated by me in weekend challange #200, haha, so fun to joke!!........but i wasnt jokeing;) :)
Very... Abstract. Like those motivational posters, except not.
I agree with the others: beautiful composition.

Very powerful. I think the touch of DOF in there really works perfectly for the mood of the piece. Glorious as is expected from you.
@ndy: Thank you very, very much, @ndy.
Roger: Thanks! UV unwrapping can be a challenge with every mesh. It's still an area I am trying to improve in my Blender work.
Myke: I really appreciate that, Myke.
BgDM: Wow, thank you so much! Sometimes these seemingly smaller projects can have greater expressive potential and impact than we initially anticipate. That any of our creations can connect with people on different levels and in different ways is part of what makes these projects so special and exciting to me.
Wu: Thanks, Wu. Yes, for landscapes/mountains that would be good too, although I would then use a much larger texture to cover a greater area. WC 200 should be fun indeed!
zog34: Thank you for the kind words.
Streen: Thanks a lot, Streen. The hint of DOF helped me finalize the look I wanted for this.

RobertT, I see you have not been entering competitive entries quite as often, I respect you for that. This is not usual from you RobertT, this is quite better. The mood of peace and serenity coming from this peace of art is very relaxing, I would love to have this as a poster. I still use proportional editing as well :) Although I used it since I started blender. Never stop RobertT, this is very good art, some of the best.
Regards,
The Jack
Hola Robertt
I'm going to be a bit picky, Robert.
First I would like to see more elaborated and long-term projects from you, a bit more that just two hours of work. This work is good as a test, nothing more IMO.
Second, this thread would have as maximum as three stars if the starter were a less known person. I suppose it is the drawback of the rating system, although I am for it. Sometimes people might not be objective rating well-know blenderartist's works.
To sum up, I expect more from you, Robert.
Just an opinion.
Alvaro, I don't know what are you talking about, but this is amazing work!! Isn't all Art Naive Art (http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=naive+art&btnG=Search)
I actually wanted to rate this work with a 1 star, cause I hate RT's guts. Haha. But cause I'm trying hard not to let my love/hate-feelings get the upperhand, I didn't. I rated this work high for the quality texture and -concept.
You have tests and you have tests. Some tests do belong in the testforum, others don't. And for me this test is more than just a test that has been tested before.
I do agree the ratingsystem has his flaws. Maybe some people rate this work high, just because the name of the artist. But has it occurred to you some people might rate this work low, just because the name of the artist? When you have a reputation like RT, people's expectations are very high, which can only result in disappointment in some cases (when showing a good work after a serie of superb work).
Sago
Hmm, Sago, how will you rate your own Artwork (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v483/sago/?action=view¤t=RocknRollMetal.jpg) then? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/sago/Pics/Emoticons/eyebrow2.gif

This is totally off topic (sorry RT),
but my 'Rock gives Birth to Metal' is a good example why the ratingsystem could fail. Perhaps people don't expect this kind of work from me, and for that very reason people could rate it higher or lower (than if someone else made it).
Anyway, that's what I think.
The mood of peace and serenity coming from this peace of art is very relaxing
That's what I would call the RobertT-label.... totally zen. That's why I am here, to balance things out. He's Ying, I'm Yang. He brings peace and serenity, I bring... the opposite. Hey, someone's gotta do it.

No doubt, rich opposition! Wow & Haha!! I would like to see such Zen Tandem! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/sago/Pics/Emoticons/big_smile.gif
jackj: Your words were greatly appreciated, jackj.
Alvaro: I respect your opinion. All I know is this was no test. This piece is significant to me for reasons you will never know.
Sago: You are a great artist and a funny guy. I appreciate your comments.
popski: Thanks!
