I"m working on a low poly character and would like to know if there is a good way to paint details onto the model.

On the model i decided not to use any polygons to shape the eyes. And I would like to know if there is a good way to paint the eyes onto the model so that they don't come out looking blurred. (maybe using masks so they don't blend with lower layers)

or should i just break down and use extra polys to shape out the eyes then scale them up and paint them.

Use the extra polys, I don't really see any reason why you wouldn't in the first place. If I understand what your are describing right, even with the best painted eyes they aren't going to look good because they won't have any 3 dimensional form, think like barbie eyes just flat painted.

word of advice/caution

when low poly modelling, the modelling is the easy part, the texturing is where all the tricks are.

Can't they just subdivide the mesh NeoOmega? =D
