View Full Version : Fantasy town: update 26.4.
Hi there,
this my last project and I´ve done it according this picture
http://fantasy.mrugala.net/Alan%20Lee/Alan%20Lee%20-%20Minas%20Tirith%20(2).jpg
Congrats. Very detailed work. :D
My only crit is that the texture on the big wall in the upper right part of the image looks stretched.
Other than that: good work.
Thats a beautiful render! I really like Alan Lee's illustrations for Lord of teh Rings and you've really captured the atmosphere and style of them!

really nice!
the textures are a bit similar, you could try making the lighting darker, or just giving the textures different/darker coloring?
but overall it is a great work!!
Very very nice. I can't remember the name of the LOTR city you represented (Myth Dranor I think).
My only crits would be the texturing and lighting. They both create a washed out cardboard model look. Reminds me of that build your castle from paper book my little sister made. It's probably due to the flat aspect of many of the textures.
Overal its a great scene so thumbs up.
Slep
thats great!!!!!!! how ling did it take for you to make it?? and how long did it take for your computer to render it??
Whoa
Totally ace. You should be proud of yourself :)
I want a print for my wall!!
~Misfit
Really nice :D
This really looks like Minas Tirith with that cliff and the towers
really cool work :) nice perspective and color, the ancient look is great
very good!!!
It's blender? First time I think It's render from maya.
Hard work but get really good picture.

I am very impressed. Must have been tough with only that one reference picture.

solid work! looks really cool, great detail and textures.
just, as said before, it looks like a model village, prolly cuz of some of the flat cardboard looking textures. it looks like its lit only with skydome or AO, try some directional lighting too maybe. watch the post processing too, its looking like a castle prop from those really old movies.
good job with the reference pic though, your scene is pretty close and detailed. love it.

Excellent recreation! It actually took a few moments before it sank in that I had clicked the rendering instead of the reference art.
Don't know if you've heard of it, but if you're interested:
http://www.minastirith-project.com
They're building a high-res model of the city with a custom engine that does all sorts of occlusion tests to keep it running smoothly. I don't frequent the site, but it sounds like they still need modelers and (especially) concept artists, if you're interested.

Nice atmosphere. However, I agree that it looks a tad like washed-out cardboard (which gives it an almost renaissance?-like feel to it)
Aligorith
really great. i personally liked the washed out effect... gives it a fantasy feel to me... but ultimately its your decision. the change i'd suggest is not just the texture of the rock wall, but maybe modelling in some ruggedness.
very awesome though, congrats
Great piece. Really nice overall feel to it, though, as mentioned above, very similar all around.
A larger render would be very nice to look at too.
BgDM
Indeed a large render would be nice :)
Great work Yarpen really great.
Lovely details and really nice overall scene and materials.
***** (5) start from me, well earned
PS post it to the Blender.org gallery :D
to all :thanks very much for responses:D
I have tried to make the picture directly according the reference - so there are similiar textures on the buildings and the scene looks a litle hazy.
Trichter: it´s crack - on the cliff (i hope you have thought that :) )
Slepnyrl:Minas Anor -> then Minas Tirith ;)
nokirar:
thats great!!!!!!! how ling did it take for you to make it?? and how long did it take for your computer to render it??
i don´t know exactly - it takes me realy much time :), render about 12 minutes (AO with hdri texture)
kijja: yes really it´s done with blender:)
BgDM:thanks, i´ll try to post bigger resolution
Roger::eek: 5 stars , thanks very much:D
its great, really amazing, only thing i dont like is the roof of the tower on the left, it looks as if it should stick out a wee bit from the side if you know what i mean, but apart from that i think its brilliant, i think the textures make the greenery and the sky stand out more, making all the little detail stand out more

Dude, it's unbelieveably well done. However, to me, it seems a little unreal. I think that it lacks some shadows and a central light source. It would look really cool if you added some people walking the streets or guarding the wall
This is a beautiful image. It reminds me of a detailed video game. Something I would like to see in the near future. Extreme HDR video games.
I like the overall colour tone, I am looking at ART, woo!
great stuff, 4 stars from me
ps. was that some awesome use of nodes in this picture? =D *they rock dont they!?*

I like it! It is sort of Minas Tirith-ish. Sort of.
Again thanks for replies:o . Here is a litle update.
biger image, added some people,shadows
Overall its coming along nicely. But the color of the roofs blend in with the building foundations. The roofs should be a darker color. It looks unfinished as it is.
That guy in the corner looks nice. Can you show more of him, please?
agree with womball. roofs could stand to be a little darker, or a different color so they stand out a little more. redish tiles maybe? i dunno. great work
-XrQLz :p
womball, xrqlz: that was realy final image , sorry:)
henrymop:here it is (lowpoly - about 900 faces without subsurf)
nice work! how did you use the reference image? I'm working at a similar project in these days and have some problems with the perspective...

I'm working on an ancient city project too with only a few good reference images. So it would be nice to know.
allepax, robin: I have wrote a small tutorial, hope it will help you a bit:) .
http://www.myfilehut.com/userfiles/54930/tutorial.rar
Thank you!
I was trying to place the reference image in front of the camera, and to draw the horizont line, the two points where all the horizontal lines ( in the perspective) converge, and the measurement points; but according to your images, I suppose that you have worked without assuming a rigid geometrical reference. is it right?
allepax: sorry for late reply - you are right, i have worked only with one reference, the picture geometry is not very well done.
great city? As mentioned before, I think its the white city from lord of the rings

Dude, you modeled Minas Tirith!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
Yarpen, could you please re-upload your tutorial?
Or could someone who has it, mirror it?
I'm sure there's a lot to learn from it. Great work! :D
EDIT: hope it's not too late, since we're bumping into a thread with quite some time on its back.
Nice Minas Tirith -- the rock texture is a little blured...normal map?

WOW cool it looks like an super painting my dad tought that is an pciture on pencil.SUPERB RENDER
I really like your picture. It draws me into that wonderful feeling of open space and stone.
One suggestion - if you punched up the contrast so that there are a few dark areas, then added a glow effect to let the bright areas really shine, I think you'd be happy with the result.
Again, great job. It obviously represents a lot of work.

Hi guys,
thank you for comments and sorry for so late reply. Please take my apologies, the tutorial was stored by imagefilehut that doesn´t exists now. This project is very old and i deleted "making of .. " from my computer long time ago :).

hey,
well, can you at least explain briefly how you did the lighting and the textures?
and do you not still have the blend file?

The lighting is simple - as i mentioned i used one lamp (sun light) and AO with hdri map. Textures were made from photos and modified in photoshop. The most work were made then in postprocess (i worked with several passes - glow, ao,.. ).
I´m not planing to provide the .blend file yet - sorry .

TO cgi master: He's done some nice work, but you sem frantic to learn how he's done everything. He's telling you that it's nothing complex - lighting, textures etc. 12 minute render - that means a pretty straightforward scene. I don't mean to take anything away from his work-it's very nice. I'm just saying there is nothing super ground breaking there. Once again, not everything has to be. It's a nice interpretation of an Allen Lee painting.
My advice to you is to figure out what makes you nuts about the scene and try to copy it. Read some texturing and lighting tutorials. The reason that scene works is that it's a nice composition, with well modeled buildings. All of those basic art techniques I do'nt hear discussed much.
Also, he's not going to just give you the model. He worked hard on it. Ok, that's my rant.

I like to do medieval style modeling as well. My stuff is for sale at www.turbosquid.com (http://www.turbosquid.com). Search for:
TheTextureStore
1 word. That's me. And yes, I know, shameless promo. Kick my ass. I don't mean it that way though. CGI master seems to want to get into the guts of medieval style modeling, so.... This render is low poly, and is meant to be part of a larger room etc, so I did not spend a lot of verts on bumb maps etc. Also the lights are missing - this is a render for a product I'm selling, so I just rendered what comes with it. http://www.dougturner.net/vaulting.jpg

You can NOT say that when your picture isn't even half as good as Yarpen's.

CGI Master, you really need to change your user name because you , obviously, are not. If you are having such a difficult time grasping simple lighting concepts then I would suggest the same thing 3dmedeival did and tell you to do a search in lighting tut's.
And your comment about his/her work is inappropriate considering that they are simply showing a model whereas yaren's is a complete scene.
And you want help?

Thanks sirius.
The lighting does not make sense.
What is creating the light?
Add a chandelier

looks great!
maybe the big rock could be modelled a bit more detailled, cause it looks a bit low poly, maybe some distraction maps or fractal with a small random factor would be enough.
but simply looks wunderfull

Yes, I know the lighting makes no sense. It's just a bare bones render of a model I have for sale. I did not want to add anything that was not included.
