It's finally done. Thanks to all the people who posted in the WIP thread ! It could probably have been a little more polished, but the file is so large it's now a slightly disturbing nightmare to work with. Time to move on.
2mb QuickTime VR of Mary Ann Street under attack by Martians, I've tried to push explosions as far as I can :

The cars are not mine, I downloaded them from the Blender 3D model repository.

Wow rhysy, that's incredible! I loved seeing it progress through the WIP forum, and you've really done a good job! I especially like the shockwave on the hotel.

As far as improving things goes, all I can think of is a more atmospheric feel (like BgDM says, probably a bit darker). And making the Quicktime panorama about three times as big, so we can see it in all its detail! :)

now if I could only get my quicktime to work :S

Yeah, I can't seem to play it on quicktime either...

awesome panorama! some motion blur and fog would make this piece even more spectacular!

13-Apr-06, 09:30
Thanks everyone !
I'd have to agree about the lighting. With all the modelling I never got round to trying for a more atmospheric look, probably should have done that earlier on. A problem with making a complete panorama is that the lighting has to look decent in every direction, not just fabulous in one direction.
Motion blur and rendering even larger weren't an option, total rendering time was about 8 hours (damn virtual memory !)
I might write some sort of making of article for this. Could be fun.

OMG!!!!!!!!! that is totally awesome!!!!! i agree that you should do one at a higher resolution because that is the only way i think it can be improved. good work - i take my hat off to you.

Is there any way that you could post it in a different codec.. say divx or something.

For some reason my mplayer chokes on the sound codec..

neablo
13-Apr-06, 09:57
@deathguppie:
you have to use quicktime for this; btw: theres no sound

It's really awesome, I cant stop looking around.
The lighting is maybe too bright but that's already mentioned

Wow, that is pretty cool. First time I have seen something like that. Great job!

13-Apr-06, 11:19
Super cool. So much details and so much work. Really awesome stuff. It would be great to see full animation out of this. ;)

Oh, one thing: I don't like the colors of that explosion, too much, and too dark, shades of red I think.

13-Apr-06, 20:34
Neat render. Only issue I have is the massive amount of triangular debri from the building being run across by a laser. Other than that, good one.

LGM
14-Apr-06, 01:26
Wow that's pretty sick! I really like the "easter eggs" such as the blender logo, the graffiti and the War of the Worlds banner.

I think this has been said (in the WIP thread, which I've been following by the way) but some of the airplanes seem too perfectly in formation. Especially since they're in the middle of the battle, one might wonder if they would be in formation at all at this point.

But I think it rocks, and I love your interpretation of the Martian machines.

14-Apr-06, 01:53
whee! BOOM! that was every bit as awesome as i expected. well done! i am disappointed not to see citizens fleeing in terror, but i mimicked their terrified voices as i wheeled around and around the panorama, throwing in the occasional ka-blooey! zorch! boom! for effect. super-cool! thanks! :)

really sweet! I love pano images. Awesome explosions.

14-Apr-06, 05:29
didn't read the other posts, but your astonishing higly detailed image lacks totally of motion blur.

the wonderful composition is highly affected by the impossible stillnes of the explosion pieces!

congratulations for everything else, it's five stars!

When I open the file in Quicktime, it's just one static image, is that what should happen?

(Quicktime's 'Movie Info' says the duration is 07:12), is this just one frame out of the movie? If so, do you have the whole movie online somewhere?

It's a 3D panorama, you use your mouse to look around the entire image. I would like to see an animation though...

15-Apr-06, 00:28
OH WOW:):):) i seriously have never seen one of those 3d panoramics before. any place i can find info about them??

levi
15-Apr-06, 00:43
It's the first time I've seen one those virtual panoramas too and yours is very nice indeed. It really works well and with such an incredible amount of detail too, a darker more dramatic would have lent itself to this image more though I think.

Well deserving of the high rating well done Rhysy !:)

Hmm, I get to type my response and THEN it tells me I'm not logged in. Weird. Try again...

Thanks all !
As I've said render times are just too long to permit larger renders (which wouldn't look good anyway), motion blur (just pretend there's a very fast camera), and animating it would be like mining a tunnel through solid granite with a blunt toothbrush with bristles made of balsa wood. Honestly. And I want to move on.

Hippie : I'm quite happy with the colours, though there's no real reason for buildings to be filled with petrol.
[t0rc] : The amount of debris is accurate, you watch the building shatter in the realtime view.
LGM : Well, yes.. maybe they're reinforcements ?
jimww : :D Sorry, couldn't do screaming hordes. Would have if I could but the vertex count...
Milky, STELLA : You can probably find everything with a bit of searching. I'll write a complete "making of" as soon as time permits though (too much uni work right now).

Also if anyone fancies trying a walkcyle for either of the Fighting Machines, let me know and I'll upload the .blends. Don't have the interest in animating them myself.

It is absolutely fantastic. I only ever seem to make an object at a time. Scenes arew something I'm very gradually working towards. But this? Incredible. Just one question..,

Why is the sign with the street name on it, back to front? :D And why does it say Ann Street Mary. And am I pedantic? lol

Great work

Amazing work.

Really nice work Rhysy 2, I remember having the concept album when it first came out - yes I'm old. If you had wanted to add people or a few extra props you could have 'comped' them in, couldn't you? MAde them in separate scenes with greenscreen backgrounds and composited them in?

Well, anyway - congratulations, looking forward to your next work!

It is awsome. No it is amazing.

Rhysy 2
03-May-06, 14:00
Ooooh, cool, a gallery ! :D

PassiveSmok : Nice to see you got the rest of your name now ! ;)
dodgydavec : I truly have no idea what happened to the sign there. It's the same texture as on the sign opposite. So how it re-ordered the words is a total mystery...
HOSJ, Squir : Thanks !
Gmanx : I have the original album but it's my parents...:p
I could have composited in lots of extra stuff, but then, I would have had to model lots of extra stuff first. Also by the end I just wanted to move on.
Will start another epic project soon...

i sat there waiting for it to load for a bit because i thought it was a movie.

Great work man, and God Bless.:)

wow thats just fantastic, I didnt have the honor of following the WIP thread, but I will have a look through it now. Seems very much hard work, skill and determination in this, and so great to pan around and see more and more!

Absolutely top notch! Congrats!

Rhysy 2
06-May-06, 10:39
Why, thank you very much. :o

basse : I don't understand - do the images not in the gallery not load ? Or is it the QuickTime thing ? Not sure if there's a format for panoramas that works for Linux or not. I assumed QT was universal.

I've started writing a "making of" guide. I've no idea where I'm supposed to post stuff like this. The first part is done :
http://rhysy.plexersoft.com/Part1.pdf
Still suffering with download problems though. Should be OK for broadband users.

I really like this piece, the detail is amazing! Ive not actually seen the whole of the film, but i have read (some) of the book, and this is better than either of them (lol)
I must also say that your pdf was very good as well (and quite funny too)
thanks for this great piece

Cant view this properly in QuickTime Alternative :(
But as a fellow cardiff lad, from what i can see the CIA is very well reproduced.

Will have a good look 2moro when i install proper quick time.

Thanks everyone !

I have finally completed the second part of the guide, which deals with modelling the ground-level scene. I really didn't anticipate spending this long on it, but final uni exams and project work soaked up time and the will to write. 1.47mb (I know this will be a problem for some people because of website problems, but I can't do a lot about that - don't worry, you're not missing out on anything anyway:p )
http://rhysy.plexersoft.com/Part%202.pdf
The next section will be a more generic, beginner-oriented guide to texturing, and should be more useful.
