this is pure awesome. You, sir, win an internet.
Seriously. pure quality. keep up the good work.
but may i ask how many of the textures were procedural, how many were images, and if they were UV mapped?
tHIS IS HOW YOU JOIN A FORUM. wELCOME AND ENJOY YOUR STAY. (Sorry for the caps lock)
This is very high quality. I have so many questions.
How long have you been doing 3d?
How did you do that awesome lightning?
Did you have a concept?

Well done. The lighting and texturing is great.

:O *bows* we're not worthy
Hey, that's really good.
I would add a background of some sort, though. Even if only a wall. Also, the nose doesn't seem detailed enough.
But good work. I really like it. :-)

I've won the Internet? But I don't have a use for terrabytes of porn.
but may i ask how many of the textures were procedural, how many were images, and if they were UV mapped?
100% Blender procedurals. I haven't learned uv-mapping yet.
How long have you been doing 3d?
Mhh ... let me think, If I sum up, I would say 3 months, with 2 hours per day. But I have started 9 months ago, but I didn't do much in that time. This is my third really serious work in 3D.
How did you do that awesome lightning?
Its AO together with 8 Area Lights, some of them with negative lightning.
Did you have a concept?
I've started out doing this for the Megadeth Design Contest on DeviantArt.
:O *bows* we're not worthy
Hey, it's not THAT good. You should see it from behind, and all the messy places on the meshes. I'm still a noob. Yes a totally noob. The only thing seperating myself from all the other sphere-render-noobs is, that I'm willing to put some time into my images (I've spent one month on this one precisely)

Thanks. Well I'm not happy with the nose either, but at one point you just have to stop and finish the picture or it won't be finished forever. :D I've played with serveral background but wasn't satisfied with any of them.
Thanks everybody for your kind comments!
edit:
I've added some WiP Images!
That is one wicked render and model. I just placed it as my new background pic. I have nothing else to say. :o
You've got some serious skills man!
Looking forward to seeing new high quality art from you!
P.S. i've set it as my wallpaper too!
Beutiful work.
Mats/shaders and lighting are top notch.

Whew! Now after 3 months of blending you have mastered the basics quite nicely! :)
I'd like to have a look at the shader settings for the skull and the horns!

Okey, from left to right: teeth, bluemetal, horns, skull (blend includet in first post!

This is the most skillfull use of procedurals I have seen! Very cool!
Thanks a lot for the blendfile!
This is absolutely incredible. Congratulations on such a wonderful job.
The materials and lighting is simply marvelous ;)
I do agree that the nose is lacking some detail though. It seems like on of the weak points possibly. It seems just a little bit too smooth around the nose. I think it could use a little roughening up or something.
Nice!
at this rate i would love to see an entire body come out of this. great work
kick ass light setup. i thought i was yafray!
amazing work!
reminds me about doom or quake. ah well doom3 calls me! i love that game...

man that looks genious! the light setup is incredible!
sorry, nothing to criticise... :D :D :D
I love this render! Reminds me of a Giger or id Software piece.
ops all are procedual textures? great! you fooled me with the scull cracks.
i thought first it would be a painted map.
oh yes giger. actualy ID and doom three reminds me a lot about Giga's work.
just finished doom after a 7 hour marathon session. that game rocks, so often i made people laugh here because the game shocked me so often that one time i even lost controll about the mouse. jesus i never got that from any game. doom3 is realy amazing. the sound, the fact that all is so dark most of the time ...
ah well

Wow, that is bloody amazing! I've found the blend file for the materials immeasurably useful, thanks for the leg up :D

Wow, awesome, you win the internet (crap that's allready been taken).
So what was Gimped? Color corection or somthin'?
How long did it take to render?

Damn, imma have to change my undies now..I S#!T my pants!
That is so awesome! Man, THIS is how new users should post for now on..Wait, I cant even do anything like that and I have been using blender since 98.....Ok, Lets just say new users can post more than spheres and cubes..you have just proved that point!
Great work, Great work, Great work!
Really nice work... Especially good for only to be your 3rd project. Took pretty long to do but in a year or two you'll work 10 times faster with practise. Also a nice reminder what Blender's material editor is capable of in good hands.
This is the most skillfull use of procedurals I have seen! Very cool!
Thanks. The power of procedurals is often underestimated. Hail Procedurals! :Z
ops all are procedual textures? great! you fooled me with the scull cracks.

Thanks. I used low nabla values for the marble procedural to gain that effect. Most people forget about the Nabla-Value, when using procedurals. Funny, because it's the most powerfull of all.
oh yes giger. actualy ID and doom three reminds me a lot about Giga's work.

Really, I somewhat get bored by even watching others play ... mh but maybe its different if you play it yourself.
at this rate i would love to see an entire body come out of this. great work
Thats unlikely. I'd rather move on to new projects. But maybe sometime in the future...
Wow, awesome, you win the internet (crap that's allready been taken).

Actually I didn't correct the colors or the contrast in the usual sense. I copied the image to an extra layer, blurred it, lowered the alpha-value to something around 30% and then made the bleding mode overlay. That and a lillt bit level-correction afterwards.
It took something about 8 hours to reder in 1654x1300 pixel resolution, 16 oversamples, 16 AO-samples and 16 samples for every arealight (about 6 or 8 if I remember correctly) and something about 2.000.000 polys (with 3 subdivision levels).
Damn, imma have to change my undies now..I S#!T my pants!
You can't say shit around here? :P How about the f-word? Mhh ... trick ... ficken. :D

Of course thay can do more than spehres, EVERYONE can do more than spheres. People who post spheres as finished projects aren't untalented or noobs or bad artists, thay are just lazy. :P
Really nice work... Especially good for only to be your 3rd project.
You have to consider "first finished project". Actually I completely redid this model several times from scratch, as well as the lightning and the textures. So there was quite some practse involved.
Took pretty long to do but in a year or two you'll work 10 times faster with practise.
I really hope so. :D
Also a nice reminder what Blender's material editor is capable of in good hands.
Like they always say, it's not the tool ...:D Thans.
Thanks for your kind comments everybody .:D
The nabla value...
WTF does nabla mean at all?
It does not change anything in the render preview.
Nabla is a myth. Or not? Hands up everyone using nabla! And then please explain it! :)

I use Nabla if I don't my elbows and kneecaps start gettin' ashy.
It puts the lotion on!
.... i thought i was yafray!...
I made that mistake once too, turns out that i am actually ME and not Yafray :P
The lighting is great, at the moment, lighting my projects is causing me a great deal of heartache, i just cant do it. Could you post an image with your lighting setup? If you dont mind sharing that is.
The nabla value...
WTF does nabla mean at all?
There you go... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nabla)
It does not change anything in the render preview.
Thats because the old render preview didn't use the actual renderengine. The difference betweeen different values for nabla is clearly visiable in the render preview since version 2.42.
Nabla is a myth. Or not? Hands up everyone using nabla!
Me! :D
And then please explain it! :)
I've made a little image showing the influence of different nabla values on procedural textures:

Heh heh.... hey man, if you want your work in the Forum Gallery, just ask it..... it deserves it anyway.
Sago
Indeed. Thus it is moved.
BgDM
Rightfully moved I'd say! How stupid of me to never spot this one before! Really incredible work. And thanks for sharing the materials, I'm trying to figure out how to invent such materials myself. Thanks again. I love the render and the light setting. The high-res one is my desktop. Ah...nice desktop...hey Doom3 icon...bye:). ***** (I rated this one 5 stars)
Great work, and many thanks for the materials!
Heh heh.... hey man, if you want your work in the Forum Gallery, just ask it.....
But why? It seems that asking isn't necessary after all ;) :D
Indeed. Thus it is moved.
Thanks for the nice comments everybody :)
Great work. I like how you used negative lights to darken the AO'd areas. Really nice lighting and texturing. Worthy of any horror game. Brings back memorys of quake and doom.
I've done alittle update, because I was never really satisfied with the nose and somne other things. I've posted the updated Version in this first post.
