View Full Version : Up and Down + QuickTimeVR
-update 13-4-'06-
Sorry to put this in this "old" threat. But I made a new render of my scene with a few adjustements. Some of them are a new lens, new trees, new render settings, changed light settings, some miner modelling glitches.

C&C still most welcome..
-----EDIT-----
Here's a NEW AND IMPROVED QuickTime VR version of the image like above! Mind your brain...
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/6776/qtvrel4.jpg (http://sanderwit.googlepages.com/upanddown.mov)
It's about 500kb.
-----EDIT-----
Hi everybody.
This is my latest work. It is based on Up and Down, a litho by M.C. Escher. (1947) I am pretty happy with the result, but C&C is still very welcome since I always feel the need to improve it.

Wow! It looks great [!] :P
GREAT WORK , just amazing! :o
did you use any postprocess?
Looks great...
... but I have the strange feeling something very similar has been done before with Blender.
Dunno,
good work anyway.

Wow.......................................
That is just like the picture. Only colored and prettier :)
Veeery nice!
Would you mind telling us how you did that 180° field of view? Did you just set the camera lens-value to a very small number? Or is that modelled and then twisted using some tools in blender?
you are the master of the stairs!
extraordinario! are you use panoramic render,or a composite post proces, or what?
i feel sick watch the image up... down... o viceversa?
:o ;) bye
yay! i love escher's work, and i love cool blender renders, so I like this one very much! :o :D Can we see how you did that amazing thing??
I like it a lot. The joint through the middle of the picture is pretty obvious though. I think you should try to join the abutment on the left with the springer (the stone where the arch begins to curve) for the corner in the middle-left of the image. Something about the shading there bugs me too...
Otherwise I'm really impressed! Nice job!
Awesome job !
Compared to the other grainy render you posted for advice the other day, This is a H-U-G-E improvement :D
Wow!
Wasnt it hard to work on something like that in 3D? I mean, drawing it seems easy, but having to navigate through a paradox like that seems pretty challenging. Nice work man.
Amazing stuff! Big Escher fan here... :D
Only crit would be the leaves of the palm tree, they could use a bit more texture/details. They look rather flat.
Fuck, that hurts my head.
Really good work man
awesome work. I'm trying to make something of escher in blender, but It never comes out right.
This is the best work I've seen for a long time. Thanks very much :-|.
Wow! It looks great. Thank you.
GREAT WORK! did you use any postprocess? Thank you. Yes I did. For the colours and a slight glow I use Photoshop. But the panorama was done with the pano function of blender with 64 slices.
Looks great... but I have the strange feeling something very similar has been done before with Blender. Thanks Sago. Some things of Escher were done before in 3D, this one too, but not with Blender, and IMO that one wasn't based on Escher's version as much as I did. But Google it up, there are loads of Escher's work made in 3D.
That is just like the picture. Only colored and prettier'. Thanks. That''s really cool to hear :).
Would you mind telling us how you did that 180° field of view? It is done with the camera rotated to the left 90 degrees, oriented to the top, made the image size 30x1000 and then rendered with PANO on and with 64 Xparts. So Blender makes 64 slices and creates a panorama with them. I didn't knew this was possible and halley helped me out with this. Before I knew this, I made 20 slices and made it one picture with Photoshop or Autostitch. A hell of a job...
i feel sick watch the image up... down... o viceversa? Hehe, my dad had the same. Though it looks okay, but with a better look it seem all wrong. With a even better look, you will understand that the scene was created without anything behind the camera and without a roof, and then everything copied and rotated and placed in the right spot. But to make everything seemless was the hardest part. But it worked out ok IMO. I'l make a screengrab soon so it is clearer.
yay! i love escher's work, and i love cool blender renders, so I like this one very much! Can we see how you did that amazing thing??Thanks :). Reed the previous and wait for my screengrab ;).
The joint through the middle of the picture is pretty obvious though. Thanks for the critic. But I do not understand it fully. Could you explain clearer?
Compared to the other grainy render you posted for advice the other day, This is a H-U-G-E improvement.Hehe thanks. I thought so too. Making a pano render with Blender alone and with higher AO settings makes it a lot better. I agree.
Wasnt it hard to work on something like that in 3D? I mean, drawing it seems easy, but having to navigate through a paradox like that seems pretty challenging.Hehe, thanks. Yes it was indeed. That was the hardest part. Figuring out how to model it, and how to render it. But it worked out nicly IMHO. (There is nothing wrong with being proud I guess, I am happy with the result.)
Only crit would be the leaves of the palm tree, they could use a bit more texture/details. They look rather flat. Thanks for the crit, never took notice of it. When I put more time in it, I will make it better. Thanks.
****, that hurts my head.
Really good work manHaha. Thank you.
awesome work. I'm trying to make something of escher in blender, but It never comes out right.Good luck. Notice that some of his work is impossible to recreate in 3D. Perhaps with loads of post-procession. But for most of his work there is a way to recreate it. Good luck, and have fun.
Thanks for all the reply's.
Sorry for awnsering them all...
I will post an update when I have one...

It makes me feel dizzy :D like my mind is stuck in a loop that goes on forever...
Hehe, actually, it kinda does go on forever... Check out this picture 8):

Are you trying to make me lose the last remnants of sanity I have left?
Looks like I forgot to reply in this thread. Great work dude.
As mentioned on CG Talk, some better textures would really make this spectacular. Congrats on the stars over there too. Well deserved.

Looks a lot better then the previous render, but just add a tiny little more AO.
P
Holy Crap! Amazing. My eyes and brain got twisted as I scrolled down to see the picture.
Truly awesome rendering!
:D :D :D :D :D
WHAT The?! This is simply incredible! One of the most exciting images I have seen for a little while.
Very good job! I hope to see more incredible works of art like this soon!!! = )
Good luck. Notice that some of his work is impossible to recreate in 3D. Perhaps with loads of post-procession. But for most of his work there is a way to recreate it. Good luck, and have fun.
not nessesarily, I made the impoosible box in blender for fun. You can always use little tricks. Even without post prossessing. For a lot of the pictures it all has to do with camera angle.
just for fun check this out. I think all the blender-heads will enjoy this. The escher foundation recreated some of his works in 3d. The Dialouge in them are really cheesy, but the rotation of the camera angle is really cool.
http://www.mcescher.com/Downloads/downloads.htm
also, If you don't mind (and im sure other people here are wondering too) could you show a wire and a different camera angle to see how you did it.
once again, sweet picture!
Yes, Great!! You can be proud on this 'one'.

I actually have this picture hung right by my bed, so this is awesome!!

Hey,
The only thing that bothers me about this image is the graininess. What's your AO set at? Feels like 5 or 8, when 16 would really make this image pop.
This really is a fabulous piece. I think the comment about textures isn't a bad idea -- even though you did it for fun this is the kind of thing that gets people recognition and would be great for a portfolio. Just simple sandstone bump mapping on the homes, etc., would do it I think.

WOW.
my only crit: your palm fronds need help... just apply a texture like theese to color alpha and nor..
i like the palms. It's simplicity matches with the houses.
Thanks yoeri, I kinda agree,
but jessethemid, thanks a lot man, I will try it...
and kattkieru. thanks. I will seriously try improving it. AO was 9 btw, but I will set it higher if it will help.

Actually this has been done before.
I created a similar piece of work for one of the weekend challenges.
Wich I won btw :).
But I must admit this version has a lot more detail and it looks slightly more correct in the perspective.
I had to fake it a bit.
For the rest It is almost identical, check:

It should also be in the Hall of fame but that seems to be down at the moment.

Very well done! It's aways a pleasure to see some great images done with Blender. Congratulations!
I loved the QTVR! It is a completely new way to interact with this kind of image.
It's been a while, therefor some wouldn't like it that I reply in this topic again, but I've made a little update and I have more time now to add perhaps things. If anybody has critics or comments, please post 'em.
The update is in the first post.
That looks amazing! Much better! Less grainy, some glowing I see. Too bad the older one's in the Blender.org gallery. You should ask if they want to update it.
omg that looks ausome great lighting and everything. nice illusion too. 2 thumbs up dude just awsome work.
Very impressive, I do love Esher too :)
Would you mind posting a wireframe?
I think you could also show us a B&W version.
Stefano
Thanks guys.
Here is a b/w version as requested.

Wow. I am amazed.
I agree with yoeri that the fronds match the houses. The whole image has a cartoony style that looks awesome.
WOW. This is just insane! Can you post that infinitely scrolling one with the new version? I love the illusion!
:) thanks, I'l see what I can do Tynach. Bit buzy at the moment. :P
hehe, no, sure. Hang on.
I've made a new QuickTime VR instead. Now with the "update" version of the image. I hope you like it!
Mind your brain.

It's about 500kb.
I really love the textures. So clean and real.
It's gooood. I was hoping to see the boy and girl from the original Escher-work, that you mentioned in the interview.
Great interview btw.... "like so".... haha. I still don't understand how you did it, even after your neverending interview, but brilliant stuff nontheless.
Sago
Thanks Sago :). I know the interview was too long, but still I didn't menage to clearify things. I thought Bart was going to cut things but he didn't, so, blame him :). No Bart was a great guy in real life. I must say it feels kinda, sarcastic, that I'm in the same video as Sago and Andy... and Anja of course. :)
I don't think it's good to make yet another version of this image since that will be my third version of it... Not that I can't do it ... I can do it ... I just won't ...
Did you notice this topic has four stars and Man in Man five stars? But the real funny thing is I have a 4.42 and Sago a 4.57... Arg! Hehe, no Sago earned it, congrats with your broken Monkey mate!
Sənder
There... just added a star....
I didn't know I never voted for it, haha.

Incredible:D
So which way is up and which way is down in 3D space? 0.o
So which way is up and which way is down in 3D space?
No one knows...;)
Ok, the red-ish floor in the middle of the image is up, and the tiles in the top and bottom, being the same floor, is down.
Ps. thanks for the romantic walk in Amsterdam saturday night...
You're very welcome, Sacha. (Are we on the first-name stadium, now? ...:p:D)
how did you make the qtvr-authoring? is there any free programm to create qtvr's with panos from blender?
Thanx
S.
Yes you can use GoCubic. Google for it! :) You just have to make a render to the front, back, sides etc with a camera lens of 16. Good luck.
Oh my god, i can't imagine how do you do that in blender O.O
