I want to start a contest for car models. futuristic or current. any kind of cars. be creative. If I can get enough people interested i'll start the contest.
Ok folks. The contest has officially begun!

The goal is to model a car (duh) in whatever design you can think of. Meaning it could be modern, futuristic, or one of them old timers.

The contest starts today, on April 23, 2005.

The contest will end on May 23, 2005 at 12:00 noon GMT

When you have finished your entry, then please post it in this thread. I'd like it if everyone planning on entering would put a placeholder, so I have an idea of what to expect. Of coarse, placeholders are not required. I will let the voting run for a week, before closing the poll. The winner of the contest, alhtough there is not really supposed to be a prize, I believe I can afford to give a way a model or two of mine, as long as they promise to use them for only educational purposes.

Good luck everyone. Start your computer! On your mouse! Click! Blend!

You may want to wait until after the 2005 Blender F1 Challenge due to start March 6...

I'm always up for a car design comp. I can't wait for Curtiss' F1 challenge, so something in the meantime would be cool.

cancelled(sorry) Why? What's wrong with going ahead with it now? I mean you've kept us hanging on for ages, you might as well run it now.

Maybe I can take over the job. What do I need to do?

-Lando Just give a start date, an end date and criteria.

eg:

Brief: To design and build a futuristic or modern day car.

Start date: Friday 22nd April

End date: Friday 29th April 00:00hrs GMT (UK time)

Entries should be submitted to this thread and a voting thread will be created next Friday. Voting will be for one week from the submission date.

Or something like that.

Ok then. I can do that, but I'm just wondering, what do you guys think on time periods? A month sounds good to me, but I've never finished a car model so I don't know how long it takes.

Either 2 weeks or a month should do. Depend how others feel though.

I'm easy however long.

Placeholder. :D

I'll also put up a prize of a copy of my Sky resource collection, which is not available anywhere yet. I'll send a copy on a CD to the winner after the voting closes. As long as that would be an acceptable prize.

Cerebus, perhaps you could update your first post to include the new dates and prizes etc.

Good luck to everyone else.

So will there be an extention? I've been so busy recently I've had almost no time for blendering at all.
With a new deadline I'd be keen to get back into it.

Lando
26-May-05, 14:27
Yes there is now an extended deadline. When I get all the commited entries, as long as no one objects, I'll start the voting thread. That is unless someone needs for me to set a deadline.

This is an oldie, but since I haven't seen a voting thread, does that mean the extended deadline hasn't passed yet? If I still can, I'd like to enter. So:

OK, so when is the deadline? My current project is almost done for a front-render, but I'll be going away for a week, so I can't work on it again until the weekend.

sonix
22-Jun-05, 16:49
It's up to Lando to be honest. There's just placeholders at the moment and he suggested to wait until the entries came in before he started a voting thread.

Perhaps a month from now for the deadline? Or less? If we need one.

Hmm, I guess I got confused about who's "the boss". I looked it up again just now, now I remember :)

I think a deadline would be preferable, to have a little focus to the contest. "A deadline has a wonderful way of focussing the mind". A month would be OK by me, although I don't think I need a whole month, but some extra time can't hurt. As long as I can post my entry earlier, or else I could forget to do it at all...

Ok, guys, it's still going. Deadline will be in a week. That's the 10th of August. I'd better hurry up and finish up my entry!

But I have a question.
The car should be textured, on a nice place and all that or just the model will do?

I realy hope that just the model will do. :|

halfgaar

I hope the model will do as well.

Strictly speaking, the deadline has passed, but since no-one has posted, I think it's OK to post my entry:

You obviously don't "read" images :). It's rendered in Blender internal.

Yes I couldn't finish mine either. Too busy. I will shortly post a voting thread with a yes/no question as to whether he should win or not. I suppose that's the only option. Or we could just call halfgaar the winner.

By the way, nice car,

Not the kind of victory I was hoping for... Being both first and last is not very much of a performance...

By the way, nice car,

Thanks :)

Well then halfgaar, give me an extra few days, and I'll just finish my car and then you have a better victory with your killing modelling skills! Oh, by the way, could you explain what method you used in modelling it, and do you have any tips? i've never been very good at cars, at least not when I look at the work of the pro's here on elYsiun. I've always had some trouble with anything remotly organic.

You've got them, if it's up to me. I've never been one for deadlines anyway :)

When your goal is failure, that's probably what you get... Meaning, give yourself some credit :) I'll bet you're just lowering our expectations to make us gasp at your image...

Using boxmodelling would have been faster, but I have yet to learn that skill. I've got this extensive PDF on it, by LionTR. I can upload is somewhere, if you can't find it elsewhere.

What I did was lay out the edge of a bodypanel with edges (using blueprints to find the exact shape) and then extrude from that edgeline in the length of the panel. That's the basic of my technique. It's a very slow way, for me at least :)

Tips, I've got a few.
- Use only quads, as you probaly know.
- Don't start a new (part of the) mesh for seperate body panels. Model the car as one object and cut the seems for the panels in later. This way, you have perfectly lining up of reflections etc. You do, however, have to keep the panels in mind when modelling, so that you can easily add the extra edges and cuts when the time has come.

Well... I know it's not much. But remember, it's my first finished car. I'd like to thank halfgaar and sonix (back in the WIP thread) for their tips and support. I started the remodel after the start date, just in case you weren't sure.

Whoops. I've run into a problem. Only moderators can post new threads here and I need to get a voting thread. What do I do? I've got to get that thread up soon!

Thanks,

-Lando

P.S. Sonix, since everyone everyone's entries were late, I'd say it's fair if you squeeze in an entry before the voting thread is posted.

halfgaar
19-Aug-05, 08:47
Hmm, I think I've made a grave error. I failed to read and interpret "the contest will start on..." correctly. The beginnings of my car were already on my harddrive before the startdate. Technicly, this makes my entry invalid. What to do.... :(?

Lando
19-Aug-05, 09:26
Well I'd just leave your entry. My piece's early begginings (i.e. the backround, parking lot, wheel model) were in existance before the start date. We need at least two entries to make this thing work so I'd say that that's all okay.

But still, we need a voting thread. Unfortunatly I can't even edit the thread to make it a poll, since the person who posted this thread abondoned it.

If we have a bit more entries, perhaps we can ask a moderator. So Sonix, finish up your car :)

19-Aug-05, 10:47
if you guys want more entries to 'appeal' to a mod, i have a car that i've been working on since last week, and could enter it, it's not completed yet but i don't mind, i'd just be intrested in seeing how many votes it gets
heres the link to the WIP page: http://www.elysiun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48868
currently it's yafray, but i'll re render on internal

halfgaar
20-Aug-05, 09:20
By al means, enter it. We unfortunatly don't have a deadline you can work towards (or do we? Lando?), but I guess you can enter it once you feel it's complete enough.

Lando
20-Aug-05, 18:19
No unfortunately we do not have a deadline :( . We did have one, but then the deadline passed so everyone (except halfgaar) is sending in what they've got. So please, if you started making a car after the startdate, and it is at a competable state, please post it. The more entries the better.

Do you think you can finish it any time soon? If these are you latest images, you haven't made much progress since a few weeks, perhaps months...
