O_O amazing! crazy!
wow amazing.... like always
.::However::. it would look cooler with a trail of slime or something on the ground
Question: was the background Blended or was it a picture?
Totally awesome. Only problem is the shadows aren't strong enough, as I told you on IRC.
Great! nothing to crit from me. You're ability with blender is amazing!!

Amazing work, @ndy, very artistic. Edit: By the way, did you model the character in that pose, or is he rigged?

Yeah, you just made it today :D
Amazing, it's great to see how you progress.
*Jawdrops* Thats with blender........Tutorial! Please!!!Yes it seems annoying and selfish...but its amazing....
WoW...this is cool
nice materials nice eyes, nice environment, nice everything, no not a single crit for me.... :-?
very good work m8 ;)
totally WICKED !!
:o
is that Blender :o :o ???
Oh my freaking gawd :o
My jaw just dropped onto the floor.
You're a modelling god, and you know your
Blender as well. :D
Now I am asking for a tutorial too!
(Bows in honor)
Thats just wild man, I am SO impressed.
/J
pictures like this makes me go to bury myself in bed forever.
Its awesome. Totally.
I....................It............its....WOW!
I dont know what to say. Oh wait i do have something to say.
Tutorial!!!
I'm seriously not going to sleep tonight
after this image..
Come on man...did you really make EVERYTHING
with the standard Blender 2.33 in that image?
Please answer, or at least give us some clues.
Pretty please! (*begs*)
Your mapping is INSANE. I can't even imagine
how you could just "slap" something like that
together so quickly with that
intense attention to detail....man...creases
here...and creases here..
Not to mention the translucensy on the ear...
I'm not speechless...I'm on a SPEECH rage...
Please PLEASE give us some more information.
/J
Stunning work, well done.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Very good, very good, incredable texturing and modeling. NICE WORK :P
cool its on blender3d.com
that was pretty fast
I am absolutely amazed.
Andy, if you would write us a few tutorials on how you do what you do, you would increase the collective ability of all blender users significantly. You're just that good.
@ndy, great work!! Is he going to be in a scene with lox...? ;).
Top notch!
Cheers,
b01c
Amazing. :o
LOVE the expression! Laughed out loud!

@ndy, you have truly blessed my desktop. This is a helluva lot cooler than that "Incredibles" wallpaper that I had before. I'm sure this will make the front page at cgtalk!

Read these (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77484)
Also, find some good painting tutorials and you'll be on the right track.
As already stated multiple times, incredible work. Just wait til we get SSS! That's the only thing I feel it is lacking.

LOLL had the same wallpaper too, now it is this frog too.
not sure about cgtalk though

Danm good work :D :o

A beautiful piece of work, and a really nice job on the
shader and texturing :)
/nozzy
Great stuff! I love the expression on the character, and the material's got a really nice feeling too. Well done, once again.
Fantastic render @ndi. And please, don't say thinks like: Oh, well, I did something today, while I was bored and playing with my mouse and so.... and then posting such a wonderful render. It makes me feel ill... :)

Brilliant! Someone said the shadows needed more depth, but I think they are just fine. Is it posed with armatures or not?
EDIT: Oh, and how much is post-processed?

Excellent characted @ndy.
Looks some what familiar to Lox in the mouth and eye area, but that is OK.
I alkso agree with WeidHat about the shadows. Could be a little stronger.
BgDM
Hmm. Not bad.
;)
Right! I 'scuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor!!
Impressive work! Great character design. Fantastic texturing!
I wanna know how you did this!

Yes, so far you are the only one who can create this kind of images with blender, so we are begging you to share your method, please.
O, and animate it :D
And congrats on the (yet) 4 stars on cgtalk.
:o :o :o
Amazing work!
*speechless*
:) very, _very_ nice texturing job...
I dont see problems with shadows... but I see a problem with composition overall. the character seems to be floating in a blurred background. especially when you look at it's toes, they don't seem to touch ground.
did you render the character with that background, or is this layer work in postpro?
I know you like to keep your secrets, but .. any info on those textures would make me very happy :)

At this point...
I think @ndy deserves his own gallery on Blender3D.org. :D

I think this image: http://www.artificial3d.com/images/wired.jpg deserves to be inserted in the blender3d.com gallery. Will you not submit it @ndy? IMO it's one of the best Blender pics ever.
wow. Who said there is no SSS in blender???
EDIT- I saw the movies on the site. Now I can't wait to see an animation of snog ;)
Monkeyboi - I agree completely. But you forgot lox should be in the gallery as well :D http://artificial3d.com/images/blender/lox.jpg. @ndy is simply incredible.
EDIT - Actually it is already there but it should be BIG and in an obvious place so every one can see it :-?. (I think the gallery section needs re-designing to make browsing easier).

Yup, Lox is there, and true, navigation could be better. The old images seem a bit hidden, they are not easily accesed. Maybe there could be a button in the bottom saying 'More' linking to the previous month?
just wonderful work, @ndy :)
I've got only two crits: I think a tad more shadow on the left side of the image wouldn't be out of place, and neather would a bit of slime on the rock. It just doesn't feel right that when a slimey creature touches a surface, it doesn't leave some behind...
btw, would you mind showing us how you faked sub-surface scattering like that? I've been experimenting with textures for the first time the last couple of days, and any hints and tips would be very usefull. My ultimate goal is to create a realistic human, and SSS really helps with that...
thanks

Stunningly beautiful work of art. I've never seen so much attention to detail.
Seriously, @ndy, you're too modest about your work. Don't get mad because all you get is "awesome" this and "fantastic" that. I remember you posted something about this a while back, about being complimented too much. I feel you can't be complimented enough.
What you do may seem low to your standards, but that's because you are a GOD! Why haven't you got a phone call from ILM yet?
@ndy, this is absolutely great. I am curious - will you share some information about your texturing techniques? The translucency and sliminess are just amazing.
WOW
it shames and humiliates me that i cant make anything even remotely like that-
Keep it up!!
The wireframe looks like it was made with a spline based program... no?
@andy
You are touching the zenith of Blender modeling. The meshes tells that you are really and expert on organic modeling.
But that is not all your texturing and composition is really something to look forwad to. Keep up the good (Oh no.. "great") work :D
Its plain CG-talk Stuff (wonder if somebody already pointed that out, cause I jumped from ffirst page to post this message).
Keep working DUDE,
yes, this is a very good model and texturing work
But I have problems with the picture composition and lights and the background. This is a very good model, I think it needs perfect composition, lights and background.
Excellent!

i'm not worthy!
you rock! :o
ah well, where do i start. i'll try to answer your questions first, in my next post i'll come up with some wip images and screenies.
kramer3D: yup that's right i thought about adding a slime trail. maybe i'll add one later, but adding more details like this could go on and on... ;)
the background is blended of course, you'll see that in the screenshot i'm going to post later.
i have read every single comment [oh my gawd... so many :o] but i cant reply to every "WHOA" and "GEEEZ", i hope you understand.
WeirdHat: Yep thanks, i'll try to improve that.
thegameboy: snog was modeled in a neutral pose and then posed... but without armatures, this was a very quick thing and i didnt want to spend so much time on rigging.
Erufailon: I'm learning slooooowly, there's still so much i dont know :-?
i was practising animation all the time, IceTroll just showed me that i'm waaaay behind.
ztonzy: yes, but you already know, dont you ;)
Jim9137: aw c'mon, it's not that hard. with blender, everyone can do that.
JoOngle: that's an awesome reply :-|
the image it made with the standard blender 233 without raytracing, render time was 25 mins. but the finished image it not all blender. i am not, and i never will be good enough to make a really cool picture in blender alone. it's heavily postprocessed. so calm down, stay cool, it's nothing special really 8)
Robertt: just taking my chance to say: your latest work is awesome, you really helped me to get through my uninspired school time, thanks! :)
kramer3d, [oh again ;)] yeah i went to #blendercoders and showed it to Ton... surprisingly, he put it directly on the front page to replace my old stinky glass of milk :P
Jerri: oh well, i just have to say it, because that's the way i'm working. when i'm sitting down, strapping myself to the PC seat, with the intention to come up with something decent i never make it. my stuff is more or less occasional...
Monkeyboi: shadows yup, depth yup... gonna do that later. and you wont believe it, it's postprocessed A LOT :)
Erufailon: [hehe and again] i do... in my next post...
BgDM: yup, i see. i guess that's my modeling style. i like small mean characters :D
both were made with the intention to simulate the human face as much as possible... even if it's toony, it has to be believable.
Erufailon: [yay again!] i guess i'm not the only one, i see a lot of great blender images here and i cant even imagine how many of them were done. i dont have any special techniques, i just "do that damn stuff!!" ;)
basse: i agree with you, it's a bit of a compositing problem. although the character was rendered like that in this scene, i rendered a seperate z layer for the dof. it might be the blur that makes it seem so "composited" :-?
i'm trying to get rid of that, thanks!
mhhuahahaharr... oh wait... do i have any secrets? i dont think so :P
Monkeyboi: dunno... i never submitted any images to blender3D.com, they were all put up by b@rt and Ton. i think they know what's good and what not.
shul: heh, there is no SSS. but i found a good technique to fake it. also saw your skin shading thread, pretty good work. i did some skin shading tests lately and i think i'll post them in a few days...
lemmy: uh... uhm... i did it.. like i do it all the time... nothing really, i just blend...
Bentagon: yep, like i said, i'm gonna work on the composition of the image. i'm still trying to create a better skin shader... gonna post some tests maybe.
theropod: oh dude. i have to compliment everyone for their comments! i dont think i deserve this all. so far i'm only in the beginning. i'm 19 years old now, just about to finish school. didnt get a call from ilm [hey would be cool tho] but when i have come so far, i hope we'll see more blended movies. ;)
thoro: i'll talk about that as soon as i find out how i did it ;)
Dwarfose: omg just stop thinking that!! stop it... right now :o
okay? gone? yay!
everyone can do it!
bob_dog: nope, the model was made in blender with subsurf. the wire render is done with optimal switched on.
varuag: heh, optimal mode it cool, eh? it makes the crappiest model look good ;)
i have posted it on cgtalk and got about 20 comments so far [i think] still didnt mention i made with blender, d'oh! i think i would get more of i said it was done with max and Vray [those are the magic words for getting a choice award *hint hint*] :P
endi: oh i'm in awe! thanks for taking the time to comment this! :D
i'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with it... could you tell me more?
S68: as usual?! oh dude... as soon as i got into "as usual"... heh, i think i should go and model a cube.
okay, that's it. i'm sorry for any spelling glitches and my bad english.. this post has grown waaay to large and i'm too lazy to check it all.
about tutorials: i already mentioned it somewhere, i dont really like writing tuts. i rather tell people directly what i'm doing.
i'm at #blenderchat very often, so if you catch me dont hesitate, just ask. sometimes i just drop a line about my "secrets" :P
a better method to contact me is via msn, and i usually tell moooore secrets, wheeeee!
thank you all!

"i would get more of i said it was done with max and Vray [those are the magic words for getting a choice award *hint hint*]"
:) maybe I am not paranoid?
about the lights: I think, the picture will better, if you use strong side light and other lights low
composition: ok, maybe good, but the background needs to be better
oh, forget me, my english is bad to say what I want :)
Robertt: just taking my chance to say: your latest work is awesome, you really helped me to get through my uninspired school time, thanks! :)
Thank you my friend! :)
The pure excellence of your work has permanently motivated me to go further with Blender, so I must thank you for that as well.

Sure, there are many great images, but I don't know any of this style :)
wow. man, you are just amazing! you would think this came from maya, or max, you really have shown what blender can do.
interesting.. you modelled it straight on that pose?
also, do you texture at the same time you model ? in your early wip without hands, the character seems to be fully textured already..
one question about the texture map. do you paint all that from scratch, or do you use photo material .. ? it really realistic, the arms, and lips.. very yucky.. :)
.b

as i said, i modeled it not directly in that pose, i started with two mirrored halves. after i had all the modeling done i posed it. very early on, i start to assign basic materials, it gives me a better idea of what the scene is about. modeling and texturing happens pretty simultanously for me.
and no, i never use photo material for texturing [at least not for skin]. once you've got the basic color layout it's pretty easy to draw wrinkles and that stuff...
i'm still working to implement the changes suggested by endi. dont know if i can get it working... i'd rather start a new project.

i don't think you're fair here. @ndys works is breathtaking, but he hasn't got the monopol on good work. There are other excellent artists around here just to mention landis, robertt, endi... and some i just don't know (yet) or forgot.
@ndy: It's UV mapped, no? may we see the texture pictures? That would really be interesting.

ups, I seemed to miss a whole page page :) so many replies. heh.
you really have a talent for texturing, I must say. amazing stuff, again. professional quality, are you aiming to work on that industry?
and now I stop this.. :)

@andy
Mayy... be Just Mayyy be. te Optimal had enhanced it, But the fact is your modeling has the sure-confident structure which comes only with practice, remember we at blender are novices when it comes to modeling, Said that there are fellow who had improved a lot, but most of us still has to go far.
Thanks, for sharing, :P
sorry to go a wee bit off-topic, but I just had to comment on something I read here so often:
Its plain CG-talk Stuff
So many people here seem to think that GGchat and CGtalk are places you go to when you're good... NO! They're places you go at to learn! Even if you're completely utterly bad in anything 3dimensional, you can still post your work there. You'll learn an enormous amount of general tips and tricks, styles and knowhows you won't find on this forum. If there were more people from here on those forums, I'm pretty sure Blender would get more popular quite quickly. It's incredibly attractive to newbies in the field, since it's free.
Anyways, I dó agree with the fact that this (and your other works) should be shown on those forums, even if it was just for some Blender-promotion ;)
Once again, @ndy, great job! I'd love to chat with you once, to get to know some things, but unfortunately, my father uninstalled mIRC :(
keep us updated!

Dear @ndy. how did u get the DOF effect?
that was just a plain blur on the background layer in gimp. and of course it's rendered in blender. :)

How did you fake ear SSS?
i put a small lamp there :)
I must ask, what process did you use to create the texture? As I'm beginning to get better at modelling, I'm painfully aware that the texturing on anything organic I do is just not up to scratch, whether or not the modelling is. (And a good texture on a mediocre model could probably hide some of my slipups ;) )
If the post-processing was done in GIMP, presumably the textures were, too? Is there a generic method you use to get a skin texture like that, or any basic components you always use?
You say you don't use photographs for skin; is that at all, or do you use them as references? Presumably frog skin in this case!
Great Scot :o ANDY!! How you make such great textures ?:o
D_structorr
25-Jun-06, 18:38
Good job, I like the frog; looks alive almost.
EDIT: Nvm what I just said.
Classic modeling in Smooth + Subdiv. Just keep extruded or "loop-knifed" edges /opposing lines/ close [maybe you prefer just to name them Isopharms:]. Nice organic modeling. Materials. Impressive. I wonder...maybe show an image without post-touch.
*scratches nuts, stares into space, shakes head slightly left and right as mouth opens and toungue falls out*

Am I wrong here or did he do this in 2.33? henrymop,I will be surprised if he still has the file on hand... Correct me if I am wrong:o I usually am... This is a great picture done by a blender great, but I think he did a video tutorial during the making of Elephants dream, where he shows off his modelling and texturing skills, I just can`t seem to find the link to share with you guys here. But it is there.
Actually Andy on a personal note, it was because of this picture that I and some fellow co workers started using Blender for our illustrating work. Truely inspiring ! Thanks as always
