Awesome =) finally it's open!

One thing, hmm I dunno but I always found that 725 pixel wide was a bit small...I would at least allow 800...bah anyway you decide :)

PS: I'm quite disapointed to see you won't make the poster this year again :( Bah anyway! it will still be an awesome contest :D

Usagi: What did you have in mind as far as using the sequencer?

X-Warrior: 800 pixels is possible. What the heck, I will change it!

I will also consider posters again this year. Oh, what the heck, I will change that too! :)

All images must be created and RENDERED in any officially released Blender version that is available for download.
Does this mean you can render in yafray too (since yafray is integrated in blender)?

Hmmm... the last time I checked, when you click the Render button, Blender renders in the built-in renderer. To me, integrated means that when you click the render button the program renders the image you want. As soon as you can click the render button and Yafray is used for the render AND it is an official release of Blender it will be allowed. The last offical release of Blender is 2.32.
My reasons for this rule are numerous but the main one is to keep the contest even for people new to Blender and the veterens.

JamesK: we would love to see another multi-jet monster again. I loved your last one!

WeirdHat
08-Mar-04, 01:15
You CAN render with Yafray with the Render button in Blender in 2.32... you have to install Yafray seperately but Blender can use it to render.

Anyway, maybe I'll enter.

Jamesk

Multi-jets.... mmmmyeaperhaps!

Anywar, fear not - remember that all these hotkeys have been rebound to other functions in both my hands: I'll be dead slow and look like a noob ;)

Well everyone, I stand before you humbled and feeling a bit stupid. I just discovered that VERY LITTLE (I mean it is tiny.... anyone could have missed it...) drop menu below the RENDER button. The Rules have been modified and Yafray is allowed. :D

YAYA: Resizing in an outside app would be post-processing. Don't worry, everyone has to deal with the same situation.

I didn't think of that, that's interesting, but I will try something else:
rendering at a big size, and apply the pic on a plane, tweaking all the possibilities of Blender may give a good result, I will try that after work!

Coudn't you render twice the size then shrink down? This will help smooth out any jaggies.

LOL, yeah... I just thought it would make a fun change of routines - and this is arguably the most prestigous and traditional of all Blender contests...

However, since all my blender reflexes are gone by now (you know all that stuff the left hand does without involving your brain (no, not THAT!)) - so chances are I'll perform like a blind, drunken cripple on mescaline or something... Time will tell! 8)

The rules seem to say that it must be pure blender, but are we alllowed to use another program to create textures?

Mwaahaahaa! I think so... I wasn't drunk, but the rest checks out OK as far as I can remember. Interesting - you know, that is the only existing copy of that particular image (except for anything in various browser caches of course) because I lost ALL my old stuff in a bad HD crash back in september 03 or something... When looking at that F1, well, not much of a loss is it? :D

I wanted to use it to give my image some blur, maybe some noise, and to adjust the contrast and colours a bit.

Hi, CurtisS. Would it be possible to make the maximum entry render resolution 1024x768? Some of us are going to be working on very detailed entries, so the ability to feature those details without losing them at a lower resolution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for considering the request!

you could adjust the contrast and brightness by making a render, loading it onto a plane as a texture, setting to shadeless, and adjusting the brightness and contrast in the texture buttons,....I would think that would be ok, but I might be wrong.

RobertT

I have generally kept the resolution size down because I hate to scroll horizontally on a web site (which large images will generally end up doing)and to help keep the file sizes down. That said, I will bump the maximum size to 1024x1024 (I'm so easy). Okay, people, this means the max width is 1024 and the max height is 1024. You can always go smaller. ;)

Regarding post-processing in Blender...
The intent of the rule simply is-- you should be able to click the Render button and get your final image. I would regard rendering an image on a plane as NOT following the intent of the rule. Personally, I cannot think of a reason why that would need to be done anyway as Blender has all of the tools necessary to properly light and render a nicely contrasted scene.

Modron
11-Mar-04, 17:52
My suggestion was to use an image created in blender, and it is in fact standard practice to build up backbuffed layers, which is no different from applying it to a shadeless plane. This is a basic function of blender, so i would like to know to what extent we will be allowed to use this functionality. What if we made a background, render it, and use it in the backbuffer, or on a plane, as a backdrop for the main model? Legal or illegal?

SkeLeToR
11-Mar-04, 19:12
why would u do that? render times??

CurtisS
11-Mar-04, 23:57
...What if we made a background, render it, and use it in the backbuffer, or on a plane, as a backdrop for the main model? Legal or illegal?

This has been done before with many of the F1 images (including last year's #3 favorite by le-topograph) so I don't have a problem with it.

Thank you, CurtisS! :) I know what you mean about scrolling. It can be a pain, but I notice many web browsers resize images on the fly to fit in the browser window with an option to expand, so it's not as bad as it used to be.

Thanks for holding this competition. It made me a better Blender user last year, and. from what I've experienced so far working on my entry these past couple of days, I think this year will be no different in that regard. The competition will be tougher though, so I know I have some serious work to do! :D

RobertT

Modron
13-Mar-04, 19:07
Skeletor if you are not shifting your scene around, you don't have to worry about it. You just keep the background in the backbuffer and the foreground in the 3D window. If you are needing shadows on the buffered image after the fact, you have to duplicate the surface that recieves the shadow, append it to the current file, and set it to 'env' I think,...whatever the setting is that makes a material into a non material, then it will just catch your shadows. Same concept as ter2blend. Also, hannibar, if you want to exchange information with curtis, can't you do it in the open? Or maybe just not mention it here? You draw suspicion.

Modron
17-Mar-04, 02:04

So, is it OK to do this, or not?

Okay, hold everything! I apparently misunderstood Hannibar's intent of editing the XML file (I apologize Hans for the confusion). I will admit that I am in total ignorance about using YafRay as I have never bothered to try it (other than using it directly from the BLENDER render buttons). However, the intent of the rule remains, the entry image must be rendered from Blender. If I request your blend file (if you finish in the top 5) I must be able to open Blender, click the Render button and see your final image rendered on my screen. I unfortunately do not have the time to figure out what was done to an exported XML file or tweeked in the sequence editor.

The rules have been this way since 2001 and I don't see a need to change them. Again, I apologize for any confusion regarding this topic.

17-Mar-04, 22:25
Hey X,

I do have Yafray installed and have toyed with it on occasion from within Blender. I haven't bothered to learn how to export and use it to render separately. I always figured that a nice renderer would eventually be integrated into Blender (whether it be Yafray or something else) and my wait has proved worth it.

Thanks!

I had a forum there at one time but it wasn't too lively. That's why it's got a comment script thing on every page now, though people don't use it much. I don't have that many visitors now anyway, maybe 50 new people a day. I had one very busy year when I had 50.000 people come by in a few months because there's some free php scripts there. I'm back to something like 10.000 a year now, which is great but not as much as you'd think. It's not as if I ever made a penny off it hehe ;)

I will be gone for about a week (to China) and will be away from email. Any entries sent to me during that time will be posted when I return.
Thanks!

Hey curtisS!

Just wanted to know...When exactly will you close your mailbox for the entry?

Friday to Saturday midnight EST time? or what?

SkeLeToR

so now we can use AO right? because of 2.33 being official?

CurtisS
03-May-04, 01:18
Skel, 2.33 is an officially released version, so go for it!

X, entries close 12 midnight on May 7 pacific time (west coast USA). That is the 12 midnight at the end of the day not the beginning (am I saying this right?).

First of all, welcome to Elysiun and Blender.

The deadline for entries for the 2004 Blender F1 Challenge is May 7 as mentioned in my previous post. As long as you get your image to me by then you will be okay.

Are there any of you Blenderheads who have waited too long to get your F1 completed that would benefit if the deadline were extended? It is always possible to change the deadline date if there is enough need. I would certainly like to see more entries than what I have so far.

Opinions??

Opinions??Me please, please, please. I've had to many other projects, so a small extension would give me time to finish something off.

Please. :D

I have been secretly working on an F1 and would welcome a small extension.

Just so its not too long. ;)

I'd be able to texture and add an environement. I just finished completely redesigning and adding materials, but it lacks a bit of the rest.

Well, I guess I can be convinced.
My apologies to all of the Challengers who have worked hard to get their entries in before the May 7 deadline. That said, the deadline has been extended to May 15. See the F1 Challenge site for a bit more info.

The main reason is simple... I would like to see more entries in the Challenge. You had no way to foresee the change.
The May 15 deadline is final though.

wow O_O lol ok bombshell there, i have been pumping away at my entry last 2 weeks, and though i would have made my entry by the time it was needed it wouldnt have been as good as i would have like it, this extention is really great, thanks. though i was staying up 24 hours last night and i heard news of the extention i was like O_____O

thanks again, i think you'll find a lot more entries coming in, as many were waiting till near the end of the contest to put their entries in, so dont give up hope when the last hours of the contest are coming in =D

Peace Out

I think all we folks who got our F1's before the 7th should get special consideration when voting time comes!! :P ;) :D 8) :)

or at least an extra point! that way I have a chance at not being LAST PLACE! lmao

Actually you have an advantage already. You can put additional time into the details of your image where those who started late do not have that luxury.

Are we allowed to use python scripts??

Cheers,

CurtisS
09-May-04, 12:27
The rules are pretty clear. The final render must be from Blender. Whether a python script is used or not doesn't matter.
Thanks for the question.

15-May-04, 10:02
HI all,

The deadline for entries in only 17 hours away! I have received some entries this morning and will have them posted very soon.

Voting will begin as soon as I have the voting files setup on my server. I will post a separate thread in this Contest Forum when voting starts which will likely be Sunday evening. Stayed tuned and thanks for making this year's contest alot of fun (once again)!!

Hi all!

ONE HOUR UNTIL THE 2004 BLENDER F1 CHALLENGE CLOSES FOR ENTRIES!

I will try to get the web site updated tonight but more than likely I will make the last changes tomorrow morning as there have been alot of last minute entries and updates (and I am getting very tired %| ). Entries that arrive to me after the deadline (based on their email time stamp) cannot be accepted :( .

Thanks everyone! :D

Ciao for now! (and good night)

Hello All,

Entries for the 2004 Blender F1 Challenge are closed!
I will have all of the new and updated entries posted within an hour or two.

Thank you to all who took the time (some of you ALOT of time) to create F1s and once again make this contest so strong (about 40 entries). There is some outstanding work this year!

I will announce the beginning of the voting process on a separate thread here in the Contest forum. Expect that to happen within 24 hours (I need time to make sure the code work properly :) ).

I'm sure you have a good reason for this, but it's been a lot more than two hours, and the site hasn't been updated... what's up?

EDIT: There they are. :D

CurtisS
16-May-04, 15:40
I had alot of last minute entries and updates come in at the very end. I was too tired to edit and post the pages last night so I have been doing them this morning. Anyway...

The site has been updated! Enjoy!

Alas, I didn't make the deadline in time. I ended up building 3 different models but couldn't decide which to submit. Finally decided and managed to be no where near a computer with web access so missed the deadline.

No worries though, after looking at the entries page, I don't think I would have had much chance anyway.

All the best to everyone who was sensible and entered on time.

Sonix.
