Hey, I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to figuring out how to install software, so I was wondering if any could tell me how to install Film Gimp for windows. I've extracted the zip file, but kinda got stuck there.

Also, can it be useful in editing blender renders?

Thanks!

the gimp is better for editing blender's results

unless you mean an animation, in which case I don't know.

I was hoping to use film gimp's 16 bit per channel images to do some excessive motion blurring, no such luck.

To instal film gimp in windows, you need to also instal gtk (1.3 I believe, not 2)
there is a newfangled windows installer for that, it isnt difficult

as for film gimp itself, I am curious what is in that zip file of yours
I believe I found an installer for it

(film gimp is called cinepaint now)

Hey, it looks like you have the source
compiling it would be a job, I believe I ran 0.17 instead.

I wanted to use Film Gimp to edit some digital video and was also wondering if it could be used on blender animations.
Thanks for the answer.

I've already have GIMP and it looks pretty powerful, I'll just have to figure out how to use it.

Edit: Just downloaded version .17 and found installer, looks great.

Edit: What software can take a sequence of multiple hundred images and create a video file?

Cinepaint only edits images, so you must convert video to images before working in Cinepaint, and image to video after Cinepaint

Blender converts images to video. They need to be numbered, (as blenders output is), then you just go into the sequence editor >> shift a >> select: 'images' >> find your folder >> A key to select all images in that folder >> load them>>.......this gives you a 'strip', so drag it down to the bottom of the sequencer, to frame one, then go back to your display buttons, and set the frames to be the same # as is in your sequence (it will say in the sequence window how many) >> click the button that says 'Targa', and change it to whichever avi codec you want, press the button that says 'Do sequence', then 'animate', and the avi will appear in your render folder.
<edit> let me know how this film gimp is,...i often process my sequences with regular gimp, and wish it had batch processing.
Also, you don't have to go through that to get an avi out of Blender, just press the targa button, and change it to what you want before pressing animate.
Additionally, you might want to check out the functionality of Blenders sequence editor, which is quite a good video editor as well.
Also, if you want to do post processing in another application on a series of Blender images, in display buttons, press 'extensions' in the lower left corner, so the other application will know what format it is. note: many applications do not read Targa, extensions or not.

what, you've not used the video plugin?

somewhere in the gimp user manual (http://manual.gimp.org/manual/GUM/GUM.html) they talk about how to use it

you can use it to apply filters to a sequence of frames from blender...
(but I think it likes it when the number starts at 0)

I'm going to ask a few more newbie questions about what you guys are talking about, so don't get annoyed. :D

1. Cinepaint was working fine the first day, but now, under the "determine file" option, there is only xcf and automatic. It has failed to open other images, yet before, a huge list of possible file types would appear?!? Did I mess something up?

2. Can anyone explain to a newbie the batch processing in the Gimp, because that may be all I need?

Thanks again.

Ok here's the deal with me: I was gonna post a topic about video editing programs. Then I saw this topic and since I downloaded the Cinepaint zip file months ago and didn't know what to do with it checked this out. Now I'm NOT the most installer illiterate user in the world and I badly need to know how to get this program up and running (it's urgent... seriously), I do have GIMP. So can someone please explain how to do this for the dumb ones among us? Thankyou

Also, can you incorporate sounds into movies with Cinepaint?

Cinepaint is not a video editor, it's an image editor that is useful for editing still frames within an image sequence - almost the same as Gimp. You can't do cuts, transitions, audio, or anything like that.

Damn! :-| well where ever the hell I heard that and while I'm on the subject can someone give me some links to some sort of decent freeware video editor? I've asked this one before in other forums and people either give me invalid links or the wrong thing.

PS: Sorry if I'm being a nuisance putting this on this topic

Which operating system were you looking to use?

I'm still trying to figure out the GIMP batch processing myself, but if you're just looking for a video editor, you can try Virtualdub, or Zweistein, and I think there are a couple of others. The main freeware sites, 5star, NoNags, Tucows, will have them. I'd try Tucows first.

Just to carry the topic even farther, what ways can I compress a quicktime video? Are there any ways other than reducing its quality in blender?

Thanks
