View Full Version : Review of Wings3D
I tried out Wings3D out of curiosity, and this is my review:
What I did like: Loop cutting, edge cutting, bevel, bump, and intrude.
What I did not like: There is no hands on feel to the modelling, you have no practical way of controlling the view, and modelling in it is just plain slow. Also, outside of straight modelling, there isn't a whole lot you can do with it.
So, it gets one thumb up, and one thumb down from me.
I never really used it. I too used to Blender
Wings is a modeller (like a dragster is a dragster). It's designed for modelers who know what they want and know how to get there. Like Blender it takes a while to really get to know your way around, but once you get there there's flat out nothing to touch it.

You do have to set your preferences...or camera view to behave like Blender's. As for not being able to control the view...try x,y, and z.
You can also edit Wing's hotkeys.
I use several other applications, but as far as polymodeling, I think Blender rules.
I like wings but with the new features in tuhopuu like loop selection/cutting, I still prefer Blender to Wings.
As for hands on experience with Wings 3D, check out the tweak mode :)
Like about Wings 3D: closed meshes
Dont like about Wings 3D: closed meshes :)
A combo of Blender/Tuhopuu is what I use at the moment. Its better to get to know one software very well, than to spread yourself thinly over loads of different software.

I've been using Wings3D just about as long as I've been using Blender and I love modeling in Wings3D as apposed to blender. But its a preference thing. One program is not ever better than another... its all up to individual tastes. Same goes for high end software. I actually prefer 3DSMax over Maya and softimage. But thats me.
I think Wings3D is a good program but much more clumsy feeling than Blender. At one point I was using Wings for most of my modeling because of some of the tools it had. I eventually decided that the closed mesh thing was way too restricted and went back to full tiime modeling with Blender despite its lack of some really important tools. Fortunatly now I can agree with dante that with the new features in Tuhopuu there is no reason for me to use wings except for maybe its excellent autoUV tools. I think the only other modeling tools that Wings has that I wish blender had are bevel and edge hardness, neither of which are critical like loop cut and the knife tool. before I close I think I'll say it again, the new modeling tools in Tuhopuu ROCK!!!

Wings IS superfast once you take the time to set up your personalised hotkeys.
I have set up [N][M][<][>][?] Keys as tramslate Normal, Free, X, Y, andZ axis in that order. I can modify each to tramsform Rotate, Scale or Extrude simply by hitting the [Alt],[Shift] or [Ctrl] modifiers. With the Align view to selection command I can swing all over the my mesh instantly or use the [X], [Y],[Z] hotkeys just like Blenders [7],[1],[3].
But with all the possible translations just a simple Key-combo away, where your view is pointing is not so important. (its like being able to shoot with yr back to the target).
Not to mention Wings strong selection abilities. I find Wings and Blender compliment each other very well and hope they both stay different.
If I was getting abstract id say wings=Zen and Blender=Hindu

I think youre right about them being useful in combination. You do need a converter though. I suggest 'crossroads'.
No need for Crossroads... Wings fix .obj export/import script works without a hitch.
Where can I find the "Wings fix .obj export/import script" and which versions of Blender is it working with at this point (if you know)? Thanks
here you go.

this is the best .obj script i have used. it only works with 2.23 i think. there are some .obj scripts for 2.28 but i haven't tried them. later

hey dudes.. at is that tuhopuu that some of talk about?
i found just a link at blender.org (or whatever) wich dont have nothing to use.... it works in windows? where i can get it (at home i have linux)
Tuhopuu doesn't have anything to do with wings, but is also pretty cool, and to get it, just go to the start of the thread in 'News and Chat' entitled 'BF Radiosity render and Tuhopuu2', and on the fist page there is a link.
