hi this is from the gimp-win ML
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gimpwin-users/
This is for Power Users. If you don't think your are one, don't read
any further.
It's GIMP Bug Week this week. End-users are invited to find bugs in
the developer ("unstable") branch of GIMP. The latest developer GIMP
(1.3.20) built for Windows is downloadable from
www.gimp.org/win32/gimp-head.zip . You will also need Pango 1.2.5, Atk
1.2.4, GTK+ 2.2.4 and the other new dependencies listed at the end of
www.gimp.org/win32/downloads.html . It is also a good idea to make sure
you have the latest GLib, 2.2.3. Just unzip the new stuff and GIMP
1.3.20 in some fresh folder, and prefix the bin (and maybe lib) folder
to your PATH, and run gimp-1.3.
If you have purely installation related problems (missing DLLs, etc),
don't open Bugzilla bugs for them. They are not bugs in GIMP (in its
source code). (But do feel free to report such problems on this list.)
Once you get GIMP 1.3.20 started OK, you can start looking for bugs in
it.

Thanks for the links.
Did all of the above and got Gimp 1.3 working on windows.
Looking at the improvements, its well worth the effort
Cheers

Well I got gimp1.3 working for windows. It was an interesting adventure that I embarked on my own a week or two ago.
It mostly involves downloading a lot of library dependencies (and I do mean a lot), and either installing them through their installer or copying them into gimp's bin\ path. Once that is done, it works like a charm.

Two questions.
What kind of improvements ?
Total (estimated) size of dependancies ?

Well what impressed me the most was the new GUI. Dockable / tabbed toolbars and a bit more colour.
It just feels different to use. Some of the tools have improved or enhanced features. I have not done a list so I cant tell you here.
The change log is on the site. Too much to mention here. Just have a look from 1.25 onwards and you will see.
Size of dependencies roughly 13Meg in their original zipped form.
Unzipped about 40Meg.
I just popped all the folders from the dependencies into the Gimp folder. I am sure with the correct sorting out there will be plenty unneccessary files.
The WIN version is still in Beta from what I gather and there are some features missing from my version, like the animation tools for instance :( And one bug I found was the rounded text script. (Not round by a long shot)
Cheers

Could you post a screenshot of the windows version of 1.3?
Thanks!

I wish I could, but no server space.
If you know of a free spot let me know.
Otherwise, why not give it a try.
Its easy to install. If you have hassles, I will be glad to help.
Cheers

Here ya go:
http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/rm.vaneijbergen/wimp-s.png (http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/rm.vaneijbergen/wimp.png)
It's very very slow tho, it really makes my system (PIII 933/GF3) slow down to a crawl.
The Linux version is waaay much faster (and also still in beta stage).

That is strange.
I am running a PIII 550. And I dont notice a speed difference from 1.25 to 1.3

Well I've to wait at least 10 seconds for a menu or dialog to come up.
Drawing or any other operation inside of the drawing canvas is quite fast though.

Have you tried this one:
www.gimp.org/win32/gimp-1.3.22-20031009.zip
It's the latest build I can find.
(not an installer - still need dependencies)

Weird :o
what strikes me is that the whole application seems to be HUGE compared to the one I have home on linux.. the panels eat all your screen size, no room for the actual picture :) why is that?

That's because things don't (re)size very well with the windows version.
When making the windows smaller, things in the UI are cut away for some reason.
But my display is too small anyway :)
(editing images at 1024x768 using GIMP is no fun - have to Alt+Tab through the windows all the time)

Yes, I would have to agree. 1024x768 GIMP editing is a little bit of a pain. Especially with a 14" monitor. :(. And also, have u checked that you have changed the dpi for image? GIMP 1.3 changed it's default dpi from 72 to 300. That makes one heck of a big difference, as you may have noticed. I am not running the latest 1.3, but I have a dual processor PIII 500mHZ machine, and it is not slower than 1.2.5
Cheers.

A quick note about DPI:
If an image is 1024x768 pixels in resolution, if it is 300 or 72 dpi makes no difference on editing it as it is still 1024pixels wide by 768pixels tall. DPI is only used when you are outputting things to print and how much information is squashed into an area on paper. If you only really care about the number of pixels it is, like for web or a lot of 3D texturing... dpi means nothing and is irrelevant.
<edit>
I just read you meant your screen resolution was at 1024x768... anyways... my apologies for not quite understanding the post.
